You can put a turbo on any gasoline motor you want. I suppose you could do it with a supercharger as well, but it'd be much harder without a kit.

how much custom fabbircation would be involved and would it be easier than a full motor swap

Oh, I have no idea man. I know next to nothing about your car. I would think that a full motor swap would be cake compared to custom mounting some random supercharger.

It's a huge ordeal to custom make a turbo setup.. I'm working on a V6 turbo tho. Kits soon .

The 2.8 and 3.1 are bother and sister in the GM 60 degree V6 family, there is a 3.4 too but that is a whole other can of worms unless you are talking about the 3.4HT crate motor. Anyhow consider that a 2.8 in the FWD Cavaliers are more than similar to the one in your ride. THen look at this:

btw the 3.4 ht is no longer available from GM but you can get a short block from a wrecking yard 3.4 sohc motor and some from 4th gen camaros.

Superchargers are actually relatively simple to deal with… the hardest part is to figure out some kind of bracket that will hold it steady and fit in the space you have. Turbos are a bit harder since that involves more then 2x the plumbing and still requires you to solve packaging issues.

WRT to “custom mounting some random supercharger” it’s really not that big a deal. Most aftermarket setups don’t really need much more then a flat plate to mount to just like an accessory. The OEM blowers tend to be a little more work since they typically expect to be able to bolt to the stock engine configureation, but it still can be done. In this case it’s an M-90 out of a t-bird on a 5.0 in an LTD:
