Thought id share my side pipe pic. Looks pretty badass IMO.

And yes its a side pipe not pipes. I found about 4 feet of rusty pipe making the car sound like a V8 with rusted headers. I had just enough left to come up with this. I'm happy.

Need to get sound clips comparing it to my V8 car.
Very close sound, both have cherry bomb mufflers.

 

might look better once the door is replaced! LOL.... otherwise looks alright..

Yea, I was hoping the door would distract from that before the flames started. I like that old school style. Its the only shiny part of the car. As you know its like those prismatic 25cent machine stickers.

Some have suggested bird logo's in the same material. But I never like the 3rd gen small birds and funky placements. Those stickers are in the same spot as the factory name plates.
[rims use to be chrome but are matte black now.]

 

I normally hate side pipes, but after realising how much of a pain in the *** doing my exaust is going to be (not to mention expensive) i'd actually concider them. And this pic makes them look real good. And i would have to black them out too. All black car, definately no chrome.

 

Dude, run them out that hole in the door! Sorry, not trying to be mean, I just couldn't resist. Luckily, my doors aren't rusty, but I just got done spending 2 weeks sanding and repainting my underbody due to rust. There are several spots that rusted through, so I'm going to have to take the interior out and cut some sections out to replace. I live in Texas, so this is my first experience with rust and I can say that I'm not a big fan of it. Death to rust! I had thought about doing a similar exhaust setup, but doesn't the floor pan drop down pretty low right where yours exits?

 

do you have any under the car shots of how you ran it where you mounted it and whatnot i plan on doing the same thing i was looking for some inspiration

Looks good ^^^. I just wish you couldn't see it so much from the side of the car. I am going to do that, but try to tuck it up in the tunnel. Then quickly out and muffl it all with oval pipes and muffflers. We will see.

 

If you can find a better way of routing them more power to ya. The reason why you can see the pipes so well in that picture is because I took them from ground level. When you are standing tho you can only see the 6in. that come out in front of the back rubbers. I'd like to see some pics when you're done with them. You'll love the sound.

What about fit ? attached right behind the cat converter ?

I had to cut my exhaust and need to do something about it, was looking underneath the car, but not sure whether a single cherry bomb or purple hornies would fit behind the cat converter ?

 

Love the side pipes, looks old school. Was trying to figure out how to run and if they had pipes in Whitney. Danm nice car, dont take pics of passager side again and stay in the far right hand lane.

 

Lots of questions to answer, sorry for not checkin in sooner.

There is just enough room for the pipe to run in that grove between the floor pan and body. Like a tiny vally but it runs right down the side of the car. But yea, there isn't much room under these cars.

 

Only mount I used was a rear rubber clamp on strap exhaust pipe hanger. Just welded it on and used a GM body bolt and ran it into the floor pan to hold it up tight to the body.


I don't have a cat. It you have a cat it will probaby be a tight fit but there should be enough room. Though you will need to cut the cat off then re-angle the pipe. The stock system has a bend that jets everything towards the middle. Well to run it straight down the side........ the pipe must aim down the side first.

Only thing I had a problem with at first was the hi rpm flow. The dual turn out tips didn't flow well enough. So I cut the end of the pipe so the exhaust can shoot out straight at the tire and out the side. Most of it comes out the side but knockin that hole in the end free'ed up the higher rpm feel.

It will rev fast and hard to red line.

Oh and in that pic I kinda show how the Y pipe is really two pipes in one. When you cut the bend off to run it straight, you will find this out too. Strange.........

red line is the cut spot, from green line to green line was rusted. But strange rust where it was only on the very top of the pipe. From under the car the pipe looked solid and good. But all alone the top it rusted out, like down the seam.

yep, just need a welder and you will find yourselfing doing all kinds of projects. takes some time to learn and get brake to just do it. but will be the best $300 you will ever spend. will save you mucho loot as you can now do most anything, you cant afford to pay to have done.

$20 cut off grinder helps but a $3 hacksaw will do.

no way I could of done it so easy and kinda cheap without a welder. would need 30 adapters n clamps a plenty. Was able to weld 90% of it off the car.

What diameter are the pipes you used?

 

just stock 2-1/2 2-1/4 pipe

FYI Everyone: The end of the pipe is also open. Thought 2 turn out would be enough but it was killing my upper RPM flow. It wasn't bad but it didn't rev as fast in the higher range. So the end of the pipe was also opened and all was well.

So build one with 3 turn outs so ya don't yell at me.

How far away? what ya looking for?

 

Just far enough away that I could get a real impression of what it looks like on the car (something where you can see the whole car)… might be somewhat irrelevant since there’s no way that anything I own is going to be happy with a 2.5” pipe, although oval might work…
