What size is your spare?

I pulled out my spare the other day and noticed it was flat. When I went to pump it up with a bike pump, the tire is all kinds of messed up.

Anyway, I find a brother on the west forum who says he has one I can have that came out of an '85 Z28. All I need to do is buy him lunch. How cool is that? Fast forward to putting it in the trunk. It won't fit.

When I got home I notice the original spare is a 14 inch. The new one I got from my bud was a 15 inch. Can I get this spare to fit in the compartment in my vert's trunk or should I now focus on finding another 14 inch spare?

Curious,

I think he is saying he did try it....it won't fit. He's asking if anyone has made the 15" spare fit in the verts.....

Yeah, it won't fit. I've even deflated the tire and tried to fit in that way with plans on carrying a can of fix-a-flat.

I'm guessing that if you have a vert, the spare is a 14 inch.

Anyone?

I actually threw mine away, it was nasty anyways and i wanted the space for my Amp and such. But i remember mine was REALLY deflated, and had canned air w/ it. I don't know rim size, but i'd say it could fit an inch bigger then it was, but mabey with a little elbow grease.

If you can't get it though, i dunno what to tell ya.

I guess I'll give it another try before going to plan B or C: Smaller spare or none at all.

Kinda stormy there in Hilton Head these days?

One last post with the original request and then I'll let it be:

What size is the spare in your convertible?

Any 15 inch spares out there?

Thanks for the response on the spare.

It's late and I'm not going outside again tonight, I just replied to this so I'd remember to go out an check tommorrow.

However, I pulled my spare out a few weeks ago to get at my jack and it was a royal pain in the *** to get both in and out even with removing all the trim/carpet/etc. It also was completely deflated (as in flat against the wheel) and came with a can of co2. It was the same exact setup/size as my old 87's spare.

So I'll check the size tommorrow.

Thanks Bro. I'm afriad yours is going to be a 14 inch spare.

It's funny because in the owners manual I have, there is a can of fix-a-flat pictured. I'm guesssing that is to inflate the spare but does that mean the spare is stored flat?

Yeah, it comes REAL flat.

I couldn't see any markings on it to indicate what exact size it was, but it looked like a 15" to me...

I took a picture and can post it later today.

They were called "inflatable spares" so they could save space in the trunk.....flat is/was the way they came

I have the original Spare in mine (no jack though since that gave out so i suppose i could get rid of the spare). But it is a 14" spare and is FULLY inflated and fits nice and easy. no can of air in there. You do have to take that trim pcs completely out to get the tire out.. but that really is not a big deal. But I have a spare in every car except the z28. (Since a 15" does not want to fit quite right in it.)

yea. you may have to do the 14". most of the cars came with 14" wheels. except for the z28 (and Irocs) So I believe they probably didn't even bother doing anything to ensure a 15" would fit. It's like all those cars you see with the 13" donut running down the road.. You know that it is not the same size as the rest of the wheels by how it sits, but that is probably all the bigger of a spare as will fit in the spare tire spot.

Just checked mine for you. 14" deflated spare. This would be on an '89 which would be pretty much the same thing you have.

Guess my question here has to be....Why does it really matter what size your spare is? With any luck it will NEVER see the ground and if it does, most likely NOT for long.....

Go with a 14" inflatable that will fit in the pocket and move on....

Well. Imagine for instance you are going on a trip. Say... the trip takes you through montana.... say for some reason your tire blows.. Now chances are when it does this.. you will be able 100 miles from any town in which you can get help (since thy are spaced out pretty far even on I-94 and I-90. Better to be safe than sorry.. If I could I would put of full size spare/whel in it) But there is zero room for such a think as that really lol

I just wanna keep my car equipped and as it was intended from the factory. You never know when you might need a spare and that is the whole reason for carrying one. I would sure hate to have to leave my car on the side of the road because all it had was a flat tire.

~shrug~

Anyway, it looks like at this point the 14" spare is what I need. The 15" just won't fit.

My theory is, ... if a tire blows out, no one is going to steal it while i'm walking for help anyways. lol.

Cool. When then while you're walking into town at 3am I'll swap my spare out and just drive home for the night.

Vert Spare

The convertibles (most if not all) shipped with what was called a Space Saver Spare. It was placed in the trunk deflated and it came with an aerosol inflator. I still have the space saver spare but not the air can. I carry a small conpressor in case I should one day have to deploy the spare - of course, with the compresser if the leak is not too bad you can inflate the regular tire and drive to a tire shop for service...

When I first got my car I checked the spare and discovered that it was flat. I went to a gas station and pulled it out of the trunk and inflated it. It was upon trying to put it back into the trunk that I discovered that it was supposed to be stored flat... So far I've never used it, and I hope I never will but it is there if that day should ever come.

Even better. I like my front bumper attached to the car. There isn't any easy way to get my car on a tow truck with how low it is. They'd destroy my fascia. I'm perfectly fine with swapping a tire if I need to. Although soon I'll need to get a bigger spare to clear my brakes.

Just took my spare and jack out for the first time in 15 years to check it out. What a b*tch, it was like wrestling with a gator to get that sucker out. There's no way in hello I'm going to get that thing back in that tiny little space. Do they make continental kits for Firebirds/Camaros?

Well, I finally got the thing in. It would only go in a certain way and it is totally deflated. I will be carrying a can of fix-a-flat in the back along with the usual emergency gear that the car came with... first aid kit.

Every one else have a first aid kit?

I've got one but it did not come with my car. Is there anything to associate the kit you have as being a part of the car?

careful with the fix-a-flat in your spare. once you fill it up, your "deflaitable" spare is pretty much toast. That stuff turns to gum once it hits the air. it's a pita to clean up after you fill a tire with it...... from what I hear, the factory canisters are re-fillable

AAA Plus is my spare - they will send a flatbed upon request, but the contracted tow driver will first annoy you by showing up with a standard truck, assuring you that he can tow your car 'just fine'. AAA will pay for the flatbed, just stand your ground and they will send one out. My last 3rd gen, an '87 T/A WS6 was towed more than once (blow motor once, flat 2nd time) and both times no problem getting the car on the truck.

A working compact spare would be nice, I'll admit - but it's not always feasable. This kind of stuff is exactly what AAA is for. That, and locking your keys in your car when you don't have a coat hanger handy....

Sweet! Pay someone to break into your car! No Thanks. Again, a flatbed might work for you guys but even with the extension ramps on the back the last flatbed couldn't get mine unless I pulled the front bumper/airdamn off.

As for locking my keys in the car. I do that all the time. I've got a magnetic box between the heat shielding and the gas tank. Pain in the *** to get to but can't be seen unless you know where it is.

yea.. I would never let a tow truck pick my car up.. only a flatbed.. not that is sets that close to the ground (about 5" of clearance) but you can bet by the time it gets anywear the front clip will be messed up and the rear bumper and or exaust would be messed up (from hitting the ground when ever the tow driver went over a pot hole in the road.. and you can bet he would find at least 2).. not to mention most will want to tow it from the front... which is not good for a RWD car....

Actually, the problem I had when talked into using a 'stinger' (only once!) was that when they picked up my car, the metal stirrup things that the wheels go into damaged one of my 16x8 mesh (GTA style) wheels on my '87 T/A. The driver, of course, denied it - but I knew my car, and there was no wheel damage prior to that.

AAA sent me a claim form, and I don't even remember what ever happened. I must have blocked it out with my other traumatizing experiences, such as the demise of my '82 Camaro (a story for another day).

I can't recall ever having one, or moving it and it was discarded by management here (apt renter), either way, runnin on nothin but my Bridgestones! Not even winter meats here, and it can be a problem, so I'm watching my self this year. I now have to trek 4 hours out of the city to visit my folks, who retired mere months ago

I can't see a RR style grille working on the slope nose, however, late 92 generation Cadillacs and the Allante had a slim nose design. I bought my (88 Deville) Continental Rolls Royce style E&G grille off eBay for under $100 Not damn bad at all. I didn't alter the rear bumper or add trunk lid rack, though they're not too bad. The rear bumper spare is only for looks, is it not? Never seen one up close, sad to say. Far as the spares, I've seen plenty of spare tires at the junkyard dirt cheap, full or small size, I'd advise getting a radial spare
