About to go in for the 4th rebuild in 4 years

2-4 band toast, converter slipping and some other bs on this 4th tranny. I'm finally giving up on the guy and going to another shop.

I'm looking for a Trans-go shift kit, Vette Servo, Corvette torque converter, for about a 1800ish stall.

Is there anything else I should look for? I thought I remember reading that there's something out there better than the Vette Servo. . . .??? Most of the quotes I've gotten are between $900-$1300.

Anything else I should be looking for? I'm tired of replacing these damn things.

The servo apply pin needs to be set to the perfect length or you will kill the band and reverse input drum every time. Make sure the next builder does this. Measure the outside diameter of the reverse input drum. 7.026 is what they measure new.

Heres what I would do.

Get ahold of Dana at Probuilt, or someone like Jimmy's Transmissions, get a trans either built or the entire job/install done thru them.

A properly done 700 should go to the about 450-500hp level and survive.

Have about 50k on one that ran me 1700$(ran behind hotcam/vortec swap/new vortec 350 and current 383) for trans and converter, several other people in my area have them as well and not one issue. (all our Jimmy's transmissions, Mundelein, IL) Alos about 2/3-3/4 of the chicago Buick Chapter are running Jimmys Trans as well

If there is no one near you and you dont want to buy a trans that way, find your local Buick club and ask them where they tend to go to get theirs done.

later
Jeremy

Although I'm familiar with Pro-Built's reputation and quality, I would prefer to do something local. After including shipping from place else and paying for the install (something I just don't have the time to do), the money just becomes more than I can bear.

You can't go wrong with Pro-Built. The problem with 700R4s is that there are a lot of shops that just don't know how to build them. TH350s and 400s are still the performance standard in a lot of places, and the builders will often scoff at building a performance 700R4.

I couldn't find a local shop that had anything good to say about a 700R4. I hooked up with Dana through TGO and bought a full kit and converter from him and did the build myself. The results are amazing. One possibility might be to find a local trans shop that would install his kit with his recommendations. Setup is everything in a 700R4, and Dana has clearance specs that he has developed over the years that are different from what a trans manual says, but they work perfectly with the parts supplied in his kits.

Eventually I'm sure people will come out of the dark ages and realize that TH350s and TH400s haven't been used in a new car in about 15 years. New cars all have 4, 5, or 6 speed overdrive automatics that stand up behind engines producing ever more power. Obviously the newer transmissions are capable of taking quite a bit of power, or the OEMs would go out of business on warranty claims. Popular Diesel trucks are making upwards of 600 lbs/ft stock now, and cars are making 300-400 HP stock with modern EFI V8s.

The car goes in Sunday night. This guys seems to know what he's doing and just kept saying, "Trust me, you'll be pleased." This is after we discussed his 1000hp C3 Corvette for about 20 minutes. This guy also raced and won some autox event with a 3rd gen camaro back in the 80's. It comes to $1250 and a 12 month/unlimited mile warrenty, and he's like 5 minutes from my house. We'll see. . . . .
