Bought cap & rotor- yipe!

I'm planning to do a major tuneup this weekend; work's been hell lately, and I figure it's a good way to unwind. Like I said last year, I didn't want an Accel cap/rotor this time, so I hunted down an AC/Delco one. Wow. The cap was $15, and the rotor (separate) was $7. So that's $22, the cost of the Accel 8133 cap/rotor kit. The AC distributor cap is part #D314a, and the rotor was part #D446. I know there's cheaper places on-line and over-phone, but I didn't want to wait for shipping.

Jason, I checked into that Borg-Warner cap... remember, the red one? Pep Boys's had a BorgWarner cap for $15, and it was gray. Do you have a part # kicking around for the red one?

I'm toying with painting the AC Delco cap red... (it's black)... but I don't think I'm going to bother with it.

Tom, you cannot paint Bak-A-Lite.
It is molded coloring.
PERHAPS, they made a batch of red ones, next mold came into the request line, they had grey bak-a-lite, then they needed more of that V-6 cap stuff, it came out gray.
YOU WOULD need to media blast the cap, to make the paint stick.
That's fair pricing you paid.
How does the quality look?

Blue streak is the best IMO.
I have had mine for a while now. Perfect shape. Good throttle response.... blah blah blah. Accel is crap.

That's why I said I probably wouldn't bother painting it; looks like the surface would need a lot of prep... and sanding the outside of a cap doesn't sound like fun to me!

Glad to see I'm not the only one that's had the inside of an Accel cap go to hell! We'll see how the AC/Delco one holds up. I haven't seen Blue Streak caps/rotors around here; and as of my last check, MSD didn't make a cap. (Why they make a cap for the Ford Mustang 4-cylinder engine, and not one for our car, I don't know!)

My Accels have held up very well.
All 3 usage ones (74 Corvette, 85 Firebird & my 85 S-10 Blazer).
I do get some powdery stuff, but, I only check them once every other year. It's not big deal, to me & the performance I get from the Accel stuff. For the 3.4 swap, I only sand paper the inside and re-used it.
Same with my S-10 Blazer. Heck, I'm even reusing the spark plugs, too. I use Bosch on that engine. I found some of my old Bosch Platinum plugs, I only need three more for using on the Firebird (hope I find them!). I media blast them clean. I don't bother regapping. It's the plug wires I'm concerned with (cross arching & resting/burning on an exhaust manifold).

"Wells" brand stuff, they have a RED cap with brass points I think, they are sold at AUTOZONE if you have those by you.

Thanks for the info, Ryan! There's no Autozone's around here, but I've been offered "Wells" ignition parts before; a few of the real parts stores around me could probably order one. Thanks again!
