I have 3 sets of 82-84 Trans Am Factory Power bulge air cleaner/lid/underhod solenoid assemblies. These are kind of hard to find and I have been holding onto these in case I needed any of them but I could use the money more than i could use them right now. One of the lower bases has had another "snorkel" riveted onto the opposite side, that will only work if you relocate your coolant overflow jug, because it would hit it. I have another under-hood solenoid assembly but its still mounted to my T/A. These originally came on LG4/L69 engines, and will not work with crossfire engines.





$80 a set which is one air cleaner bottom, one lid with rubber gasket, and one underhood air box with solenoid. I have 3 sets.

It is pretty straight forward. The air cleaner installed on the carb just like any other air cleaner, and the air box installs on the hood with 3 screws. The solenoid gets grounded to the hood and the power wire goes to a vacuum switch that has 1 hot wire going to it, and when the switch reaches the proper vacuum, it completes the circuit which opens the flap within the air box. I am not sure if it has a relay or not, but that's the basics of how it works.

 

No relay. Uses switched on power. That's how mine is at least.

Here is a pic of the vac switch thats on my T/A. My car does not have this assembly installed currently, though. I am not sure where it gets the power from exactly, but I can try to trace it if you want..

You can wire it so that it get's power when you have the key on "on". Just find a switched power wire. It'll open when you turn the key, but when the car turns on it'll close. Just attatch a vacuum hose to the top. Then at WOT/hard accel, it will open.

Will this bolt up on a TBI car? Mine does have the bulge hood.
