Radio wiring help
So im trying to wire in a factory head unit with the EQ from a later year 3rd gen into my 86 IROC. The wire harness that is in the car wont fit the radio so Im left to splice the wires together.
Ive figured most of them out using diagrams I found here, except for a few. I got all the speaker wire figured out so they arent the problem.
The power wires are leaving me baffled. All the diagrams Ive read have a different order of wire than what I have. Even my chiltons book have different orders of the wire.
In the pic below, the top wire (orange) I believe is 12V constant, the yellow wire is 12V ACC. Im lost after that. I have a grey wire, brown wire then black. Im sure the black is ground, but according to some diagrams the black should be in a different spot.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

Re: Radio wiring help
I found the info I needed. Just a bit a digging around found that they changed plugs in 89. So i just found wiring diagrams for both plugs and that was it. This place is great!

Re: Radio wiring help
I believe that the dark brown wire is for a dimmer switch and the lighter tan-ish wire is unused, or at least thats what I can determine from looking at wiring diagrams and trying to remember when I did this.
If you ground that black wire and leave the brown and light tan wire disconnected the stereo should work fine

Re: Radio wiring help
Those are great diagrams!
I just want to add that the "lights dimming" and "lights on" wires are reversed if you are installing a later model GM radio (late 90's-up).

I'm replacing the carpet in my 89 RS and I want to run the speaker wires in the factory duct on the drivers side to the trunk. Have any of you heard of anyone doing this? Were there any issues like hum from the gas tank electronics?

Re: Radio wiring help
I was trying to install a radio in my 87 that the previous owner just cut out. All that I have to work with is a bunch of wires, there is no factory plug. Is this normal? I've done a few installs before and they all had a factory plug.

Ive got the black white blue connectors all reinstalled in mine but does any body know where I can get a replacement pigtail for the two prong connector shown above on the 82-88 diagram, the one for orange 12 vDc constant and brown light dimmer.

Re: Radio wiring help
Reviving an old thread (Searched!)
I wired in my aftermarket stereo last night based off XxWickedz28xX's diagram listed above for the 92 models. My stereo has another blue wire identified as a "power" wire on it but there are no blue connections on the wiring harness i bought. Everything else lines up perfect except this wire, which im not sure it goes to, or if its even relevant.
Anybody have any insight to this?
thanks

Re: Radio wiring help
So glad I found this thread. Was getting really pissed off trying to figure out why the former owner chopped the factory harness off. Now I know what goes to what! Thanks boys!

Re: Radio wiring help
Question I have a 1984 Pontiac Trans Am and I am putting the OEM Am FM Cassette radio back in, I still have all the factory connection.
The Plug colors are Blue, White and Black, is there any order they go in behind the radio
Thanks ~~~ Don

Re: Radio wiring help
But not to worry they only fit one way. Black on the bottom, White middle, Blue top. Also there is a 4th plug back there. 2 wires Orange and brown. It will go to the pigtail coming out of the back/middle of the radio.
