Simple Subwoofer Box
Hello! So i have recently purchased a 10inch sub woofer, and am now in need of a box. Im not to crafty with wood, but I don't really want to pay a shop to do it either. Is there anyway to make a simple rectangular box like this one below, but with out the cut out for the hump? i took the plastic trim of where the hatch motor is and i believe i could fit it down there, but i do not want to have to try and make a wierd angle for the hump. Any advice welcomed, or if anyone has one they would like to get rid of let me know. Thanks Guys!

Re: Simple Subwoofer Box
I'm doing the same project now, only I was gonna work off that "shelf" there and hang the speaker enclosure beneath it. I like this idea just as much if not better. I know that's about 12"-14" from front to back in the well., I'm guessing that's a 12" speaker? Looks like it's about 6" deep and 24" wide. I may try this too. But you're right, you don't need to make a special cut for the bump when you do this. If you're using a 10" like me, you may want to put a divider somewhere around the middle inside to get the right amount of air space for back pressure. I think that box with no port would be a little too big for a 10", but I'm not an expert..... Put a divider, then hang your amp on the empty side, that's what I plan to do.

Yes, that's a 12 inch sub woofer. I just like this idea because it seems simple, and i believe it is about 14" from the front to back from what i measured today. The plastic on the back isn't hard to remove at all, just some plastic screws and disconnect the wiring and it comes right out.

Here's an idea too....
But I'm not sure I understand why you removed the plastic? You're right, it's not hard to remove, but would you you have to remove it to get the box into the well? I'd think it would slide right down in there with the trim still installed?

Re: Simple Subwoofer Box
Yea, ive seen that idea. I like it, but not sure on dimensions for it. I had removed the plastic to see if a pre-fab box would fit. If you made a rectangle design you would have to take it off, put the box down there, and then put the trim back on. I like the idea of the side box just not sure how to go about it,and how bad it might rattle the side haha.

Re: Simple Subwoofer Box
Ok. Makes sense. The only thing about that that might bug me is trying to get those little tabs at the bottom of the trim to go into the metal slots. That's tough to do with nothing in the well, with a speaker it'd be next to impossible. It might rattle some then, idk, but if that was the only thing keeping me from getting a box down in there......lol As far as the glove box idea goes, I don't know the dimensions either, but I bet there's someone on here who does. I like having that little storage space though, so I doubt I'll mess with it. But heck, if you're just looking for a rectangular box, you can pick one up online or at any sound shop for a decent price. Might be worth it if you know it would fit. I'm thinking about it, it'd be built better than I could, and would save me the work. We'll see, but I'm with you. Not paying $250 for a custom made thirdgen style well box.

Here's on on eBay for $30. Only problem would be engineering a place to hang the amp, but it could be done. This would sit face up in the well just fine. Depending on the cost, I'd rather have a separate compartment in there for that, but we'll see.

So you think that could be placed down into the well facing upwards? Im just looking for something simple, don't care much for showy stuff.

Re: Simple Subwoofer Box
Well, it looks like it. I just went out and measured, and at the very bottom of the well it's 11". This says its 12" "tall", which means face up its 12" wide for us. But since the plugs are at the "bottom", you'd want an inch or two clearance for that. Did you scroll down and see the full measurements on the dimensions? I'm like you, I just want something that works, don't care if it looks perfect, just want it generally clean. I might just hang my amp from the side of the box. Who knows, I don't have a ton of experience with this stuff, but give it a good look, it might work. I'm going to give it a serious look, but I'll check around before I buy. Still might end up with this though, can't beat the price! And free shipping too!

...another good reason to have it buried down there is security. If it's that far down they can't see it through the glass and rip you off...lol

I just measured, and it looks like it will fit! I dont think it will sit flush, so it should be fine for the wires. I think im going to order it and give it a go. $30 isn't bad. As for the amp, ill probably pit it above the gas tank or by/on the sub.

Yeah, if I don't get one myself soon I'd like to see/read how it works. I still have to buy the SW, the one I'm looking at is $110, and cash is super tight right now. I may have to wait a little to get mine finished.

Alright. I got the Rockford Fosgate Punch P3D4-10. 500 watts rms, dual voice coil and a Hifonics BRX1100.1D which puts out 800 watts rms at 2 ohms. Make sure you get a amp that will have more rms power than the sub, it will be less stress on the amp.

Yeah, I have a 950w Soundstream amp, and the SW I'm looking at is the Sundown Audio E10D4 500w rms. My sail panel and dash speakers work, but very little bass there. That's why I need the SW. LOL I plan to do the big three upgrade too when I add the SW.

Re: Simple Subwoofer Box
So heres how it turned out. The box actually has a small slant in the back, so it wont fit in the well. But it does fit on this ledge. Its pretty snug and does its job for now. Ill probably get a better box down the road though.

Re: Simple Subwoofer Box
Hey, yeah that's not too bad for what you paid. It'll get you going til you can maybe build your own. I wish I had exact measurements on that first pic in your OP. But yeah, thx for posting, I think you did ok for $30! Btw, going on your box measurements, I wonder how much you have to cut it down to make it fit in the bottom of the well? If you made another one? Maybe 2" or so thinner at the bottom?

Re: Simple Subwoofer Box
Not sure how much i would have to cut it. I like the idea of the box that goes across, because that way i can put the amp on top of it, so it'll sit lower. But for $30 it does good for now.

vibration and heat are the enemies of all electronics, especially amps, you never want to mount them on a sub or somewhere they dont get any air. they wont last very long installed that way

Re: Simple Subwoofer Box
Not sure if you had read the thread that I did about my sub box and it's design:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/car-...ell-width.html
Depending on a 10" speakers box requirements you should be able to get it to work.
