Stock 84 Z28 project, need carb.

Okay I have a project 84. It has the LG4 305 in it. The wiring harness is intact. All I want is the stock Q-jet for it. Can I use the Q-jet off a truck or caprice or monte carlo and still hook up to my harness fine? (As in I don't want to have to cut any wires or make new plug-ins etc.)

I am just looking into running it stock, I have no interest in buying a new one yet, I just want to get the car running and see where I stand from there.

Assuming this was a Canadian-delivered car when new, any non-computer controlled carb as described should work.

Okay.

Define computer controlled carb. I believe mine from facotry would have had a TPS and a few other sensors. It has an ALDL plug in the harness, but the circuit board it runs to is about 1.5" X 3". I am wondering if the 86-88 (final carbs) become more complex in computer controls, as in had a real full size ECM?

I just want to make sure I can get what I need, and will not have to fight with it.

I am just learning so please be patient with me.

If the carb you are wanting to use has the proper plug ins for the TPS and the mixture control solenoid, the choke and the solenoid for an ac equipped car it should work. That's provided the carb is good that you have to try. The computer doesn't know what the carb came off of, it sends signals to the carb via the sensors input. I'd try it.

If your car was built for export to Canada, then like five7kid says, it was not computer controlled, had no TPS, no mixture control solenoid, no ECM, and the ALDL connector under the dash is pretty much useless. The only electrical connection for sure to the carb will be for the choke, there may be a connector for the double-capacity accelerator pump.

The L69 "HO" was always computer controlled, even in Canada.

It's the LG4's that weren't.

Yep, along with the carbed V6 cars.
Joe, it's easy enough to tell if yours is a CC carb...just look for an electrical plugin on the top front of the carb, near the accelerator pump lever.

Here's what a computer-controlled carb looks like. Note the electrical connections on the top pass side (mixture control solenoid), and on the front (TPS).

If I understand this thread correctly, Joe doesn't have a carb right now.

The non-CC Canadian carb will have a connector on the front passenger corner that will look identical to the one RB posted. It's for the double-capacity accelerator pump solenoid like Apeiron said (allows a bigger pump shot when the engine isn't warmed up). It's powered by a coolant switch. It won't have the TPS connector. Some US truck carbs were the same as the Canadian non-CC carbs.

Bottom line, Joe: Any non computer controlled q-jet should work for you (with proper tuning, of course). You don't have to have one with the double-capacity accelerator pump.

Thank-you guys.
I will now hunt a Q-jet with no computer controls.

I knew I didn't see an ECM, and I just noticed my dash has no slot for a bulb to go behind the SES light.

So this means the distribtor is run through vacuum then?

Yes, the distributor will have centrifugal advance weights, a vacuum advance can, and a 4 pin module.
