Hidden gas filler

I really like the way second gen camaros hide the filler neck behind the tail light center pice. Has any one has done that to a third gen? I have an 89 GTA and would like to do this and shave the gas door from the pannel.

Re: Hidden gas filler

The filler neck would have to run right through the middle of the trunk 'well' area. You would also want to build a firewall to cover it back over, so you would end up loosing most of the little storage area you have.

Nope, thats why it goes where it goes. That and something about exhaust fumes while filling up the gas tank, of course that was before they made you shut off the car at the gas pumps.

Re: Hidden gas filler

In Ohio or Michigan, I have never been told to turn my car off to fill up....

but it has been done...people put fuel cell in the back well area for drag racing. ..but you do have to seal it off from the passengers. ...

I think there was a guy that left the tank where it was and he put a longer fill tube on and was trying to put it behind the tail light on driver side.....it has been awhile sents I seen that thread..

I have seen fuel cell installed, most don't add the NHRA required firewall,

But I have never seen a fuel filler behind the center piece of the taillight like the op wants.

And, you're right, I've never been asked to turn off at the pump, but all the pumps I have seen have a sticker saying too.

I don't know of a car after 1981 that has a filler on the rear panel.

I do enjoy asking people to find the gas cap on my 71 camaro though.

Re: Hidden gas filler

All the same from 78-88 for the Oldsmobile Cutlass, Chevy Monte Carlo, Pontiac Grand Prix, and Buick regal...

I wonder if some relocates the gas tank to the back well...weather a normal tank or fuel cell...if the space for the factory fuel tank could be used to make more room for the inside of the car...it would take a lot of cutting and welding ...

As I recall, the gas tank is mostly under the rear seats so you wouldn't really gain any interior room from this unless you also removed the rear seats.

I also remember seeing a thread on here a few years ago about moving the filler neck behind the driver's side taillight. Pretty sure he finished doing it too, but can't remember who did it. Searching either the body or fabrication forums should bring it up.

The gas tank is not under the rear sears, it's behind it.

That's what I was thinking....still would be cool to flip them ...put the tank in rear well and have the well behind rear seats...

Re: Hidden gas filler

Don't think I'd like to have the tank or filler anywhere near the rear panel, in case of a rear-end collison. Wasn't there such a problem with some little 70's GM car - was it the Pinto?

Your thinking of the Vega. Pintos were made by Ford.

Re: Hidden gas filler

I don't think GM had gas tank problems in the Vega...like ford did with the pinto....

.I don't think it matters where a tank is as long as its done right and safe...people ride bikes with a gas tank between there legs....I'm not saying go get a gas can and put in the passenger seat with a bungee cord holding it down...I'm just saying done right you could put a tank just about anywhere on anycar...

One thing my brother and I talked about is that show " bull run " and thought where could we add some small fuel tanks in the car...to help in the race...more fuel equals less stops...lol

Re: Hidden gas filler

you could put it behind the lights easier than the center because the latch is in there and if you offset the pipe to one side or the other it would leave most of the well available, just have to seal it from fumes. doesnt seem that hard, and a spring gate hinge for the light cluster.

Re: Hidden gas filler

That would be much easyier then in the center.

Remember too, the longer the filler neck ,the harder it can be to get gas in, esp with these fast gas pumps.

I was toying with the idea of deleting the gas door and putting the filler neck where the rear glove box is.

I would be concerned of fumes with it inside the passenger compartment.

Re: Hidden gas filler

my 85 monte carlo ss has it behind the tag, and iv toyed with the idea myself since third gens have flip down rear tags if its a camaro

HOWEVER heres the issue i see with that, the trunk release mechanism is right behind the tag on my camaro, how would you keep the trunk shut if you ran a filler tub there?

the non wagon B bodies (Caprice, Impala, Roadmaster, etc) had the filler behind the license plate until they were discontinued after the 96 model year.. that's really the best place to have it- it doesn't matter which side of the pump you pull up to, you are never on the wrong side and the hose has to reach the same distance..

i've actually thought about getting rid of the drop down part in the hatch of my Camaro- nothing fits back there, anyways- and putting in a Caprice tank to gain some extra capacity and put the filler behind the license plate.. i mean, the plate already flips down to get to the lock cylinder to open the hatch, anyways, so why not put the gas filler there and make gas stops just a little easier?

Re: Hidden gas filler

That filler behind the lights is slick. I'm a little skeptical on keeping the lights sealed to the body. Is there a thread showing how this is done?
