headliner repair w/fiberglass ??

watching an episode of Overhaulin they were making a custom sub box.watching this box get built made me wonder can't something just like this be done with the headliner???my headliner isn't trashed so it would be a good base.I have of course never tried anything like this or I wouldn't be posting this to see if anyone else has tried something like this. if anyone has any pics of a headliner that has been redone using fiberglass or something similar to strengthen the headliner please be all meens post the pics.

Fiberglass resin can be used to strengthen the backer when applied liberally. If you fiberglass the whole headliner you better be prepared to deal with the extra weight you're going to suddenly have hanging over your head. You're gonna have to figure out another way to hang it.

Re: headliner repair w/fiberglass ??

i fiberglassed over my stock piece. it does add a little size and weight but nothing the original mounting couldnt handle. i also basically removed the sunvisor holes and made it smooth there. the floppy visors were more of a pain then anything.

the stock piece is really fragile, so go slowly. i may have even broke mine a little but stuck it back togethor when fglassed.

recovering is not easy, either, due to the corners at least on the t-top. so i used a piece of black braided type fabric to line the corners on top and it looks pretty good.

has held up very good for 5+ years now.

i did mine with resin also, and repaired the tears with fiberglass.sand the edges and the side to be glued with the headliner, get all the bumps out. it will work fine. plan on atleast a gallon of resin. DO SMALL SECTIONS AT ONE TIME.

A gallon? Just yesterday I laid up three layers of ~14oz fiberglass on a 8 foot by 4 foot mold. It was way oversaturated to the point of pooling, and I didn't use a full gallon of resin.

Re: headliner repair w/fiberglass ??

well i wanted it to completely soak in and on both sides, this way it was solid. the compressed fiberglass headliner soaked it up really thirsty

Re: headliner repair w/fiberglass ??

i used the fiberglass cloth as well as the resin. added strength and helped hold things together.

I fibreglassed mine around the edges w/ cloth to stop it from fraying, then i re-wrapped it in suede

Re: headliner repair w/fiberglass ??

if your going to fiberglass it, could you just smooth out the imperfection with a minimal filler and paint it instead of recovering in cloth or what ever?
like you can with say a sub enclosure.

Re: headliner repair w/fiberglass ??

Smooth enough to hide under fabric and smooth enough to paint are two very different things. Also, I personally would prefer to have fabric there rather than a hard surface. That last part is purely opinion mind you.

You have a t-top car. The headliner on a full roof car is going to weigh a lot more after glassing. Also depends on how much mat you use.

But IIRC, the f-body has no interior trim piece across the front of the headliner, so on a non t-top car, there's a huge chunk with nothing holding it up but the visors. I don't recall much in the way on the sides either. I think the coat hooks hold it up on the sides.

If it were me, and I were gonna glass the headliner, I think the cleanest way to ensure it stayed up and hide the hangers would be to install an overhead console.

Re: headliner repair w/fiberglass ??

found some pics.

this first one is what your corner may look like. the fabric was not stretchy enough for me to figure any other way around this. maybe the steam heat it or something at the factory who knows.

Re: headliner repair w/fiberglass ??

this is with the fabric strip glued on with stron fabric glue. you can see it hides the corners quite well.
