Should I Make the Purchase

I plan to by he 87 Camaro Iroc Z 5.7L Larger Cam & Header , the only problem I have is that I have to install the new torque converter and also the car has been sitting for a year now and hasn't been started since .. Should I take a risk on buying it ? If so tell me how I should go about the process of getting it cranking and running again .. I'm going to attach some pics of the engine and tell me what you guys think I should do .. I need of Help I really want this 3rd gen in my life lol ..

Car: Wanting to drive 89 Iroc
Engine: 5.7 V8
Transmission: Automatic
Re: Should I Make the Purchase

I would as I did the same regarding an 89 Iroc that has not been driven in 10 years but was stored in a garage - it's a 5.7 TPI body is very nice. I have not tried to get it started other than make sure that it at least turned over and it did so I bought it and have in in my shop. I'm an old school carb guy and I don't know a thing about these fuel injected cars. So hopefully I will learn here at third gen and resurrect the old red z Iroc!

Go for it!

Re: Should I Make the Purchase

If the seller says it just needs a new torque converter expect a transmission overhaul . If it has sat with untreated stabilized fuel plan on new injectors from south bay fuel injectors, a new fuel pump and fuel filter. As far as should you buy it depends how's the engine compression, how's the rest of the car rust, missing parts. If it needs a transmission are you willing to dump $12-1400 in it and $2-300 to get it running good .

Car: 92 Firebird, 91 Trans Am
Engine: L31 with HSR, LB9
Transmission: 700R4, 700R4
Axle/Gears: '99 10 bolt 3.90, '01 10 bolt 3.42
Re: Should I Make the Purchase

I'm gonna agree about it needing a trans rebuild or replacement.

My brother bought his 92 RS with 50k on it after it sat for about 10 years in 2012. The torque converter and it slipped into third. A new converter and shift kit later and it still was pretty weak into third, but you could still drive it. 20K miles later it started slipping again and ended up rebuilding the trans. You could get a rebuilt replacement 700R4 for less than a grand. It's an easy job.

Re: Should I Make the Purchase

The car Exterior and Interior is 10/10 real clean who had it kept it up really .. Just the engine looks rusty for sitting a year and having being started .. And the car won't stop with the stock converter because the engine idle at 1200 - 1300 rpm so he tells me that's alll I need and too check Head gasket Exhaust Leak and Oil Leaks .. Also he told me before he sat it everything he put in it is brand New Engine Trans Interior .. I really won't this car guys I just don't wNna get hit over the head .. Here's more pictures

Re: Should I Make the Purchase

Receipts are nice to see rather than trusting his word. Sounds like it has vacuum leaks is why it's idling so high. Putting a higher stall converter is not the correct fix.

Re: Should I Make the Purchase

I was told he has all the receipts and everything rebuilt eng and Trans so I hope I don't have that problem ( "vacuum Leaks") because he was driving it before it was park but it just need the right converter installed but he had sat the car .. Why do you guys say it might need a Trans built from what I have said ?
