TPS Voltage makes no sense

The car/motor is as in my sig, a stock vortec head truck motor with an HSR and headers. ECM, wiring, TB, MAF is what came with the car and got bolted to the HSR. Car basically runs OK. Tuned Performance redid my prom for the HSR. Wiring in the car is a bit of a mess, I've cleaned up what I can, still a few problems so it was going to a buddy who's does it for a living next week for the rest.

While waiting for him and just because I like aggravation, I decided to reset the TPS which looks original and has never been touched. So before I even took a baseline, I decided to loosen the torx bolts and of course snapped one in the TB. Got that drilled, tapped, put things back together to read voltage. So now the problem. At closed throttle, it read 0, at WOT, reads about 3.76. Fired the car up just for fun, idles crappy, gets to about 1/3 throttle and just dies. Figuring the TPS was done or I had damaged it, I got another one from Rock Auto tonight. Put it on, I get the same reading and the car runs the same. I'll pull the IAC (which is relatively new) and clean/check it but I'm not so sure if that's the problem. And, one of the reasons for the wiring visit is because the ALDL wiring was stripped out so if there's codes, I can't tell you. Any help would be appreciated.

Which I guess I should have said in the first place, moving the TPS around gets me no change no voltage, stays at .00

Re: TPS Voltage makes no sense

Should have said stays at .00 at idle and around 3.76 at WOT even if I move the TPS around. So I have two bad TPS's that give the same readings?, bad wiring?, something with the ECM. And the car ran fine before I decide to start playing around with it.

Re: TPS Voltage makes no sense

I've seen bad TPS before, and went through a similar process years ago. I would invest in a Delco TPS. I have seen several bad standard units, as well as some others. Also you wanna make sure that your voltage sweep starts at 0 and ends and 5v, not the other way around. Some other GM applications used a physically identical sensor, but the sweep went in reverse, from 5v-0. I doubt the wiring is bad, unless it was messed with. Do you still have the original sensor? Also make sure the IAC is setup correctly.

Re: TPS Voltage makes no sense

Thanks for the tips. The TPS i bought was a standard, should have bought the AC Delco one. I put the original one on but it gives erratic readings, I have 5v at the connector with the ignition on so the wiring appears to be OK. I'll clean/adjust the IAC, get an AC Delco TPS and report back.
