pinion bearing bad, doing the 2.73-3.42 swap

Hi!

my pinion bearing is bad (pinion side to side play) and I figured I'll rebuild the axle while I'm at it and throw in some new gears. The plan is to go with all usa standard gear products. The car is a camaro rs -89 with 305tbi.

After reading around abit I found someone stating that to keep the original posi carrier you need deeper cut gears? Is this correct?

And could someone be so kind and tell me if I have all the parts I need with this list from rockauto.com:
Master overhaul kit with koyo bearings #zkgm75b
Ring and pinion #zggm75342
Axle bearings and seals #usa10004 r1563tau
C-clips #usa33082

Anything I'm missing? As I live on the other side of the globe it's quite hard to find parts at somewhat decent prices. Those parts in my list goes for 450$ with taxes inclueded and I also asked at my local dealer and the same parts was 600$...so I'd like to get it right when I order.

Anything else I'd need to know? Qualitywise?

Thanks for any replies on this

Yes it is true that to use 3 series gears (3.23 or higher, in this model of rear) on a 2 series carrier (3.08 or lower), you have to use either a gear spacer, or the "special" thick gears. The reason is, the "ratio" is NOT ONLY the ratio of the gear tooth count, BUT ALSO, the ratio of ring diameter to pinion diameter; but the ring stays the same diameter (7.5") regardless of ratio; therefore as the ratio INCREASES, the pinion diameter DECREASES; and the factory, to keep from having to make "special" gears themselves, relocates the flange on the carrier that the pinion bolts to, according to the ratio in use. The 2 series carrier, in order to accommodate the larger pinions of the lower ratios, locates the gear about .400" farther away from the pinion centerline. Therefore you need a ring gear that is about .400" thicker than it would be if it was mounted on the correct carrier.

Parts list looks OK to me, other than that; you need to get the "special" gears instead of the "regular" ones. (except, the axle bearing is R1563TAV, not R1563TAU)

Well you asked about quality, so I'm going to give my opinion. The stuff that you have listed is the cheapest stuff out there, so quality is not high. Those gears are probably going to make some noise, and the installation kit is going to have the cheap shims and other parts. The Koyo bearings are all right, but not as good as Timken. You don't need c clips unless for some odd reason yours are damaged.

You do need the thick gear set for your 2 series differential. I recommend US Gear or Yukon gears. I don't know if Tom's Differentials will ship to you or not, but contact him for the parts that you need. His stuff is the best quality and his prices are good. Also try Jim at www.jdrace.com. These guys have been building rear ends for many years and they will get you exactly what you need the first time, and they know what works best. Rockauto is just a parts warehouse and they don't do rear end work, so they don't know what works and what doesn't unless it's on the computer in front of them.

Thank you so much for the reply!

I wrote the partlist down by hand and read the v as an u

This might be asking for alot but is there any chance you could link me to a site with the special thicker gears? The problem might be to find a company willing to ship to finland.

Just about anyone who sells gears will have the regular and the thick gears for the 7.5 rear end. http://www.ringpinion.com/b2c/Produc...rce=DiffWizard

Ringpinion.com is out of the question, they wanted 300$ for shipping so I'll fire some e-mails to Tom and Jim.
Worst case is to go with the r&p I've got if the pinion hasn't been damaged. It all depends on the cost and I'm gonna pull the axle tonight to see in what condition it's in.
thanks guys!

Does the thicker ring require longer bolts? I found yukon gears here in Finland for carrier 2 and they also sold yukon installation kit #YKGM7.5B so I'll go with those. Are the usa standard gear wheel bearings and seals ok then?

The thick gear uses the same bolts as the standard gear. Ask the Yukon dealer if they have the Yukon axle bearing and seal kit. The Yukon kit has Torrington bearings in it and it's usually priced pretty cheap.
