1983 Camaro/Firebird Bellhousing

Hey Everyone,

I need the following parts
1983 Bellhousing (14060627) & Clutch fork (14037647)

I have a T5 world class transmission in my 1992 Firebird and I would like to use the mechanical clutch instead of the hydraulic.
I am looking for a 1983 Camaro bellhousing. This bellhousing was made to use a mechanical clutch linkage/clutch fork with the T5 transmission.

Thanks for any help you can provide
John

Just curious why on earth you would want the mechanical setup over the hydraulic one?

Mechanical linkages work fine and they don't leak and they don't cause any problems. I own several sixties and seventies muscle cars and road race them and they have mechanical linkages and I have never had a problem and they perform excellent. Also my 92 Firebird currently has a mechanical linkage in it and a super t10 transmission so just changing the bellhousing would allow me to bolt in the t5 without any other changes.

Its my understanding the z bar for the t5 is almost impossible to find.

aside from that, the bellhousibg your looking for pops up in the classifieds here occasionally and usually one can be found on eBay.

or if your feeling spendy....the Lakewood blow proof bellhousibg for the third gems has both patterns for yhe t10 and the angled t5

My car already has a zbar in it and it works with the super t10. What is different about the t5 zbar?

Wow this bellhousing is hard to find. Are these bellhousings really that rare? I am sure someone on this forum has one.

Yes they really are. May they stay so or even get worse.

I might still have mine somewhere. I'm quite sure I don't have any of the other linkage crap though; I distinctly remember I got tired of looking at that garbage laying around about maybe 25 years ago and threw it in the trash where it belonged, some years after I had yanked out that Neanderthal crap that I had hated EVERY SINGLE DAY I had owned the car up to that point, being EVEN WORSE than all the 50s 60s & 70s cars I had previously had. The little "hitch" in the engagement as I tried to feather the clutch to take off, but something hung up due to all the friction inherent in that Stone Age setup, finally got the better of me; and THE MINUTE I came across a 84 in the buzzard nest, I ganked the whole hydraulic setup and put it in my car. Would have been in around 86 I guess. It was THE BEST mod I had done to the car up to then; even better than getting rid of the stooopid stock shifter that felt like it had a bowl of oatmeal connecting it to the car, after I bruised my hand hitting the dash shifting to 2nd gear. (I did that within acoupla months of getting the car)

Did I mention HOW GLAD I WAS to get rid of that old crap?

Sure, it was "fine" for all those years; sure, I'd driven nothing but stick-shift cars for years and years, all equipped identically; but I felt like, probably not too far different from the first guy that thought how nice it would be to eat without having to throw something at his food as it ran by hoping to slow it down long enough to grab a bite, that there HAD GOT TO be a better way. Then after THE VERY FIRST hydraulic clutch car I drove, my mind was instantly made up: the caveman crap was doomed.

Re: 1983 Camaro/Firebird Bellhousing

I have all three third gen bellhousings. I've run both the hydraulic and mechanical T5 setups. There's a chance I'll stab a T5 back in my 86, so I keep the 83 bell.

My take: I didn't gain anything by swapping from hydraulic to mechanical.
If you break a linkage piece, you need a welder. If you have a leaking master, slave, or line, you can buy new stuff pretty much immediately at the parts store. The hydro stuff lasts longer without issue. The contorted z-bar setup doesn't last as long.

Since you have run the setup and know it's what you want, the Lakewood 15015 is available. Or be patient and overpay for an 83 bell on eBay; they've gone up lately.
