Im going to switch out my older Edelbrock headers with some newer SLP 1 3/4 headers. I will get them coated for longevity etc. What is the quality of the coating(shine, lustre) on the headers direct from SLP? Any comments?

Dont buy them coated. Save your money and have them jet hot coated of acs coated and have both the headers AND y pipe done.

Hi Jeff,

The only thing I'd be concerned about with respect to factory coated headers is having to clean up obstructions prior to installation. I don't know about the SLP's, but my Edelbrock's had nearly 1/4" of the A.I.R. tubes sticking down into each header. I ground them all flush and that area of the coating would have been compromised if my headers were precoated. Not sure if this is a big deal or not, but it would have bothered me. The other thing is, I'm going to have an extra bung welded in for wideband O2. Once everything is done, and I'm satisfied, then they'll get their ceramic coating and I'll have my piece of mind.

Btw, how's life treating you in Oregon? Did you ever get your car to a track for that dip into the 11's?

mine are holding just fine. the first site of crap with them i am calling SLP directly. they say lifetime warranty on coating.

slp's are stainless... don't see why you want to coat them

For better thermal management. And the coated SLPs are not stainless. As for the original question, I also am very happy with the fit and finish of mine.

Actually they are stainless steel. At least that's what SLP says.

This is directly from there website:

Are crafted from mandrel bent .055" wall thickness 409 stainless steel tubing for smooth uninterrupted exhaust flow.

Have 3/8" thick, investment cast 304 stainless steel flanges for better sealing and long life.


Anyways, as formularpm said, it is for thermal management.

you get things coated so they will keep the heat in the exhuast not in your engine compartment.

Hmm. A couple of my friends are machinists and they said they werent stainless, said something about the metal being magnetic. Maybe theyre wrong.

if i remember correctly, there are different grades of stainless, to which some will allow for magnets to stick (lower grade stainles...)

i dont rmemeber how it goes, maybe someone else can shed light on that...
