WOW. What the hell happened??????? T-TOP owners inside.
OK So I am finishing up dinner, and start to walk out into the garage to wash the IROC. Before i open the door, I hear glass smashing.
I look outside only to see my drivers side T-TOP is no more.
My dad was outside sitting on his tailgate, and he said nothing touched it, just exploded everywhere..... So the question (s) i have, are
Has this happened to anyone else?
What could cause a t top to just shatter everwhere, when nothing hit it?
Damn I am pissed off..........well gonna go start cleaning it up.....again.
Worst day ever.

i forgot to mention........it appears that the glass didnt "cave" in, it looks like it was blown from the underside.
there was glass behind the car, on the hatch, paint, and on the side.....

no it wasnt a bullet, My dad was sitting like 10 ft from the car....and it is in the garage, i dont see any way for a bullet to hit it in the way it shattered.......the gun would have had to have been below the car, and go through the windshield.....
im stumped.

i've heard sometimes if the inside of your car gets too hot... glass will break... not sure how true that might be...

Did you have a bottle of pop in your car? Sometimes a loose cap on a plastic bottle of coke/pepsi can sometimes get warm enough to put pressure on the cap.. and pop the cap. not quite sure.. but if there was enough pressure it could have caused the upward shattering effect.
maybe my physics class was too boring. Dont know... could be a start in the right direction.
Something in the car had to Let go. and smash against that window, Its not like there is much pressure on that window, or is there?
Obviously the tops are fastened in (not sure how because I dont own a t-top and havent seen any) but maybe the top wasn't seated 100% properly and when you clamped it in, it may have put too much pressure on the window.. and it just then finally gave in and shattered.
Dont know. just some guesses.. maybe

Maybe the last time you clamped them in they got a little twisted? I don't have a t-top and i'm not sure how they go in, but maybe they were a litle twisted when they went in, and finally gave out. Hope I helped...

One time, I left a half empty can of R134A in the back of my old firebird in July, with windows up in the sun. Ummm... I thought somebody fired a shotgun when I heard it. Thankfully it managed to not break anything... I think you have a ghost too..

if your dad says he saw nothing and nothing hit it or anything, than i'd bet that you did not have ur t-top in right and it applied pressure and over time just gave out, kinda like if your holding a lightbulb in ur hand and you apply pressure, it will shatter, BTW please do not try that, im just stating a point haha,

Had to be pressure of some sort to blow upwards like that. Someone's not telling the whole story here, whether it's your parents or yourself.
I have heard of this happening with the rear hatch, but again, that was heat related and you say you were parked in the garage. Pressure only comes in three flavors: heat, vaccuum, or stress. Vaccuum is out of the question if the windows were down.
So either the ttop was seated incorrectly or it was caused by temperature changes. This is all assuming, of course, that we're getting the whole story.

That is odd about your t-tops though man. Maybe check your struts to the trunk. If the car was in there and one of the struts all the sudden gave out and let out a bunch of pressure that was previously bottled up, it might of caused a weak little (invisible crack) to completely blow.
