Headlight Covers That WON"T come off

I've read all about how guys loose their headlight covers when they drive fast. SO rather than loose mine too, I added two small hinges at the bottom of the front. Now they can tip straight up for cleaning, or can be removed by removing the screws. I used the side mounts provided by GTS for the covers to Lay against, rather than to hold the covers from the side........I don't think these will blow off........

Paint the hinges and screws off-black and I think you will be on to something.

Which hinges did you use and how did you mount them? Looks good.

Re: Headlight Covers That WON"T come off

The hinges are 1" cabinet hinges. I drilled two holes per hinge through the headlight covers, then used machine screws with "finish" washers. They spread the force out better. The hinges are screwed into the top of the headlight cells with tiny wood screws. It actually looks much better in person. This car is in the middle of a paint job. I haven't decided if I should paint the hinges or not yet, but I like your suggestion..........

That does look good. I have a set of clear ones I picked up at a flea market but all that was in the box was the clear covers and no instructions....

Could someone give me a picture or description how these are attached?

Re: Headlight Covers That WON"T come off

The instructions that came with mine were pretty sketchy....if you just bought the clear covers, then the "other stuff" probably wasn't with them. If they are the same brand- GTS, then there should be four plastic strips- two for each cover. The plastic strips have adheasive tape to "stick them to the sides of the headlight cells.........you might try going on line to see if GTS would sell you an installation kit. I once did that with a used rollgage I bought for this car.....got everything I needed including instructions.......

Re: Headlight Covers That WON"T come off

I can't seem to find a GTS website. I hjave found link to one but they send me to a computer resource page.
The strips that you are talking about, are they angled 90 degrees to catch both the head, light cover and the side of the headlight pocket? if so I've got as pretty good Idea about them now. I have wondered about putting your hinges on the top of the hedlights instead of the bottom, that would hind the hinged and you wouldn't be putting holes in visible areas. I'll have to take another look at this....I only paid three bucks for the covers so I'm not concerned with experimenting.

Re: Headlight Covers That WON"T come off

The strips are 90 degrees to the cover. They stick to the inside of the headlight cell, and then clip around the clear lense cover. It looks like if you followed the directions, you would have to bend the cover into a "bow" shape to get it to install . With the hinges on the bottom, the force of the wind will only hold them in place better. ALso I don't think there's any easy way to hinge them from the top.........the hood is the only thing that over hangs them.........Lastly- here's the phone number of GTS from the box 714-632-1709. good luck!

Re: Headlight Covers That WON"T come off

Here's the setup I came up with. I tested them as fast as 150mph(my car wouldn't go any faster) and they stayed put. I sold a few sets here on TGO but I stopped making them because I have no free time. This is how they look on the car.

I used shatter proof 1/4" plexiglass, thin aluminum stock, and corner brackets that I bought at Home Depot. PM me and I'll send you a diagram of how they mount and instruction sheet.

Re: Headlight Covers That WON"T come off

That's sounds similar to a set I had on my '84 Daytona TurboZ.I ordered them thru Direct Connection in '84 and they even came with weather seals to fit around them. They used L-brackets top and bottom with Dzus fastners to secure the cover to them. They were nice but on a non-TPI Camaro wouldn't a headlight cover block the air pickup points for the snorkel(s).
