1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

well after the fiasco with marks custom kits(https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/afte...custom-2.html?

I decided to order an ABS headliner from 1a Auto... despite all the threads if read on bad fitment i cant say that i had any problems. the holes for the visors are tight but had no problem really getting them installed. seems to fit just fine to me and will look tons better once i cover it with fabric.

heres some pics

Re: 1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

just make SURE you follow the directions

also you need to line up the visor first before you tighten anything down

I'm good at directions

I don't have visors currently, so I guess I'll buy some of those too while I'm at it.

Re: 1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

i noticed when i did it that the black triangle on the visors rotates

well if its rotated the wrong way it wont fit into the hole in the roof right. the passenger side did that to me i had to take it back down and rotate it so that it would go in right.

Re: 1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

That looks like a perfect fit (or REALLY close to it). Impressive! Despite the good and bad of this mess, thanks for sharing. I've been considering the one from Mark's Custom KITTS and now think that's not the road to take.

Re: 1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

once its covered ill give me rating of its fit...but im pretty happy with it as of now

no problem i hope lots of people stay away from marks, the attitude he had with me was not one of a business id care to do business with again. 1a auto has made me happy with two purchases so far and great service when i call.

Re: 1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

Wow, does look really good. How easy do you think it would be to do the cut-outs for the optional overhead console?

You're going to uninstall it to cover it and then reinstall? I would hate to take it down after getting it to fit so nice.

Re: 1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

i see that the back side of the t-top section sags on your install to.. this was the main issue i had with mine. according to all the companys these headliners are made by acme company. that sag behind the t-tops is not right and it always got to me. i used a **** ton of velcro and it helped a little but not much.

Re: 1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

The cut outs are marked and would be easy to cut out with a dremel.

There's a small gap in the rear of ttops but it doesn't sag. The material will fill that void, the foam backed material is pretty thick.

I need to shift it forward a bit in the front which should help any issue you see there. I test fitted it in all of 15 mins just to make sure it fit since it's coming back out.

Easy is a matter of opinion... But I found it to be easy. It uses your factory hardware, however, you don't need the metal retainers of the old headliner.

The old clips that held headliner in place aren't used. It's held in by visors, dome light, seatbelt retainers, and all the interior trim

Glad to hear you're happy with your purchase and thanks for the review! These do vary a little from the OE's (unfortunately no perfect replacements out there yet), but looks like you were able to get things in without issue.

since ive got your attention dan is there anything that can be done to contact acme company and tell them the problems where having with these headliners i cannot find any valid contact info for them.. that huge sag behind the t-tops is not right. certainly not for the price of that part.

it is something that has been brought to our (and their attention) before; we haven't heard any word back about getting the pattern redone (they're staying very busy these days with the guys getting their cars ready for spring), but usually recommend using a heavy duty velcro to help support it better in that area. i'll do my best to replant the bug in their ear about the issue though!

Re: 1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

I'm still trying to figure out where you see a sag? I really haven't seen any big enough off spots worth a complaint. Could it use some work? Probably, but what part doesn't these days.

Look at my pics from the fiberglass liner.... Now that's a fitment issue lol

$150 bucks free shipping... Fair for what I got. It def needs covered though, a plastic roof isn't very high end lol

i put a abs liner in my 86, it fit really well, but it does hang a little in the front center, since there is nothing there to hold it up.

Re: 1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

If You look where the roof rail meets the body in the back right over the passanger seats. theres a significant sag!! you can really notice after you see a camaro with the factory original headliner. its supposed to actually sit above that rail lip. i can understand because its an aftermarket. but theres no other headliner company out there. weather you get it from 1A or classic indusrtys its the same product. and its a drag when your trying to do a complete resto. this is the second time its happened to me. The photo below shows it. i actually use a huge amount of velcro in this picture and it helped alot so you can imagine how bad it was.

Thanks Dan for taking time out to respond to me appreciate that!!

Pillsbry10 - Thanks for posting the installed liner. Hopefully mine will turn out that well. I plan to use heavy duty velcro wherever I think it may help - if I need to.

Hey, no worries, I'm always kicking around. I lucked out (so far) and still have headliner that appears to be in good shape, other than the material. Counting myself lucking and will just scrape and recover the factory piece. A bit of fiberglass cloth and resin should make things a bit more sturdy and waterproof while I'm at it. Especially since we all know how well these t-tops enjoy leaking.....

Re: 1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

I would take some welding rod or equivalent, bend it to match the contours for the roof line and fiberglass it to the back of the headliner. That should sufficiently stiffen it...

Re: 1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

Just swapped in the ABS headliner on my '87 IROC t-tops- got it in alright but there are definitely some gaps that will need some dealing. It hasn't rained here since last July and the t-tops still seal pretty good, so water isn't much of an issue. It's just a bit unsightly with them off. Still looks better than the stitching job I did to the old fabric and my attempts to get it to stick to what amounted to sawdust. :-)

I know this goes for Camaros, not sure about Firebirds/Transams but...

Are you sure you have factory t-tops and not aftermarket? Some hard tops were chopped and t-tops installed. I assume you have t-tops, I believe that is what I am looking at in the first pic.

Yeah there original t tops. The back section of the hood liner fit great it's just the front. Not sure what to do with that part . Could cut the lip down and then hopefully covering it will take up the gaps

make sure when you put the headliner up, you do not tighten anything down - loosely get the back in place and put the sunvisor brackets up loosely. make sure you follow the included instructions and you shouldn't have an issue, but you're best to start aligning up front, not in the back.

Re: 1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

If you remove the overhead light console and do not replace it, what can you use to keep the headliner up and not sag? This is an issue that I am having.

most have used either a heavy duty velcro or double sided tape (the 3m stuff that is also found on window visors)

Yep good idea getting front lined up. Problem with interior light cut out which exposes part of the hole as well. Can work around that with a trim plate. It would have been better to have just a blank hoodliner rather then having holes pre cut

Re: 1a Auto ABS Headliner Install

Well got the front lined up and the back. Its half and inch out in length and only option was to cut the middle.I cut where the interior light bolts up so little less noticable and when covered can fill that area.Annoying being that amount out but looks a treat now.I have attached pics of the finished item.Like i said once its covered will be fine but annoying just the same

Unfortunately, 20 yr old fabric just doesnt have alot of strength when wind is beating it up over the coarse of 2 summers. I ended up replacing the headliner with an ABS one last September. Fitment has been ok but not great. The gap along the T bar on the drivers side is too big for my taste but otherwise it looks good. I kind of wish I had kept the original headliner and just recovered it but thought the ABS one would last forever so I went with it.

My seats are suppose to be ready today. I went with black leather sides with fabric black/grey inserts. If they are not done I'm thinking of going somewhere else and getting mine done like yours in the white . They look great. How are they for dirt though?

I had that same problem with mine, especially since I left out the sun visors (looks better without them). I drilled a small hole towards the front center of the headliner and into the sheet metal. Used a black screw. Holds headliner up nicely!! Can't hardly tell that the screw is there.

Get you some black paint and cover the white. It will blend in with the headliner a lot better!!
