Shift **** wont go on.
I bought a new shift **** from classic industries, but it will not slide all the way down onto my shifter (700r4). The shift **** is from a 91-92 camaro. Any reason it wont fit on my car (1986) ?
Thanks

not to sound stupid but did you see if the retainer was in the shift ***? That could pose a problem trying to install it. Other than that i like the Lube IDEA

If I look down into where the shifter slides into the ****, it looks like there are two small clips on the inner side walls of it, but they look like they are meant to be there, and not move?

Please don't tell me that's the retainer clip. Look at the front of the shift **** and see if there's a little clip (kinda looks like a staple) and pry that out. You had to have done the same thing to get the old one off.

If thi sis a brand new ****, sometimes that retainer is put in there before it is covered and although it looks like the retainer is not there. dig in there with a small screw driver or get a set of needle nose and try to move whatever it is that you said was in there. If any thing just rip out what is obstructing you, put it on and insert the retainer. If the **** is loose send it back to the company and get a new one. Or give me your address and i'll ship you one.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but didn't the '86 Camaro originally come with the round ball shift **** and the '91-92 come with the square shift ****?
In which case, you would need to install a '87-92 Camaro or '84-92 Firebird shifter assembly to install the later style ****.

The 87-92 Camaro shifter is the same as the 84-92 Firebird shifter(cost cutting by GM?) which is made for the U-clip and the "rod" just sits in the shifter and is held in my the shift ****.
Compare the two and you will see the difference.

I'm just posting my experience, i'm not getting into a challange of wits..... but i just took a shifter out of a 83' and put it in a 92' and everything is fine. The mechanical workings of the shifter work the same. You are right about the snap ring but the v-clip slid straight through and is retaining the new style handle where the snap ring was sitting.

So you are both kinda right in a sense.

If you pull off the button, take off the shifter **** and look at the shaft, you will notice that the shaft is "notched" a certain way. My camaro has a notch on the drivers side that is wide, and accomodates the round **** with a wide tang on it. When you push the **** down you have to positon that tang into that notch (think of your girlfriend).
Some of the automatics have two notches, one on each side, and have smaller tangs on BOTH sides (driver and passenger). Obviously, if you try to put the wrong **** on, that extra tang is going to hit the shaft lip and keep it from going down. Look inside the original **** and see how many tangs or look at your shaft on the shifter and see if it just has one notch on the drivers side like mine (1986). I ran into a similiar problem when i pulled one off a junked car and it wouldnt fit.

Sorry, i just figured out what you meant by clips. Those are the tangs i was talking about, they point in towards the middle, and they secure the **** in the shaft so it wont spin. If you have two of them, you probably have the wrong ****.

I am trying to figure out how to take my **** off right now and looking at this thread, I am sure one of you can tell me what I am overlooking....
I have an 86 IROC with the round ball shifter on the 700R4. I can't see any clip/staple and no set screw....and it doesn't seem to just pull off.
What do I need to do to get this thing off?

pull out the button on the top of the shifter and look down you will see a snap ring remove that pull ball off simple as that.
