Ever use POR-15 ?

I was interested in cleaning up the underneath of my car. I already pressure washed it and now I am cleaning up some surface rust with a wire wheel and it is not in too bad of shape at all. Anyways I was thinking about putting this POR-15 on the underside of it and was just wondering if it is as good as they say it is. Even though the car will not see rain or snow again is this my best bet or is regular undercoating just as good ? THANKS AHEAD OF TIME!

I used a brush and its comes out great. No brush marks. Just make sure you clean the parts before painting them and scrape any loose rust off. Por-15 likes a rough surface. So if its smooth, scuff it up first.

Very Important to follow the correct steps when applying por-15

As long as you do, it works great. If you dont, it wont last but... that goes with anything.

I did my rearend with it and the stuff is bulletproof.

I was turned onto the Master Series products by a professional autobody guy. I now use them exclusively, instead of POR stuff. Use this in conjunction with some Ospho acid, and you should be able to kill and prevent the re-occurence of rust. I did this to the bottom of my '95 Formula before winter, and checked under there the other day...rust is not coming back through.

you HAVE to sand/scuff the surface before you use POR-15 or it will just flake right off and you have to re-do everyhting. But if you sand/scuff it well, it will alst and stick very good. Just don;t get it on your hands!!! lol

I'm still trying to figure what it is myself but if you go to www.por15.com they got a video you can watch about it. The product is a bit expensive but if it works as good as these guys say it does, its worth it.

POR-15-----------I agree is the best IF you follow their directions. I've used The Eastwood product and it is very good but POR-15 is the best!! It's been on my GTA for three years now with no rust thru. Do it right the first time.

I used 2 pints to do the engine bay, wheel wells, and the entire bottom of the car.

I havent gotten a chance to drive the car yet since I applied mine (engine swap) but it looks great! Self leveling so no brush strokes. Like said above though, it doesnt like smooth surfaces.

You can apply por-15 over smooth surfaces as long as you use Metal Ready, and let it sit for 30-45 min. Por-15 makes a whole line of incredable products, I have used a large number of these and hands down they know what they are doing. I have applied por-15 to rusted LCA that we're taken off my Camaro, no Metal Ready I didnt even scrape it down or nothing just threw on some paint for a test. Let it cure for a day or so and hit it with a hammer and... nothing not even a chip, and if it does chip it doesnt spread like other paint products. These LCA have been outside for 2 years from summer to winter and still show NO signs of anything but a beutiful por-15 finish.
Por-15 Hardnose and Engine Enamel are also some paint to look into for other projects.
Hope I could help

Yeah, I'd have to back up the POR-15 claims, I used the stuff on the floor pans on a 68 mustang and a 75 Dart swinger, and its like a rock. When I get a chance im going to put in on the battery box on my T/A. i'd use it its great

When I did my rearend, I actually used a wirewheel on a die grinder as well as a sandblaster to get as much of the rust off as possible.

I then cleaned the hell out of everything with the marineclean. Getting everything as clean as possible and making sure to get all dirt, grease and whatnot off is very very important.

Once everything is clean you have to prep the metal using metal ready. You might not think its important, but it creates a very different surface. You have to keep the metal wet with the metal ready for 30minutes I believe.

Once that happens the metal has to thouroughly dry out, then you can apply the por15.

Light coats is important too, you dont want to apply it too thick otherwise it doesnt dry right and just flakes off.

Basically as long as you follow the directions from the company you will be fine.

like others have said, as long as you apply it correctly it is as good or better than they bill it as.

If you dont prep it correctly it will just flake off, quicker than regular paint will because as it drys it shrinks down and if it isnt adhered to the metal correctly it just pulls off.

I painted my k-member and didnt get it prepped perfect and it pulled away in a few spots.

Do it right and you will be pleased.
----------
very very important like others said to not get it on your hands.

If you do get it on, any skin you need to get it off immediately otherwise its not coming off until the skin wears off. I actually had to take some sandpaper to my skin to wear off some... doh

i got some on my glasses and it came off after it cured a week or so and shrunk enough to pop off.

I have a guestion for those that have used it. Plan on doing the underbody of my car with POR-15, but all the stuff that I have read on thier web page says that the surface needs to be cleaned and preped, but does that mean all the existing paint needs to be stripped off? Or will it stick to old paint? Just curious because that changes things a little if I need to strip all the paint off the underbody of the car.

You cannot paint POR-15 over existing paint. You need to get it to either bare rust or metal and use the metal-ready to get the zinc coating on the metal prior to putting the POR on.

You want as much metal showing as possible, it's called POR for "Paint Over Rust" which basically means it can handle a little bit of surface rust in the pits by chemically altering it to be a hard substance and infuses into that and the metal below. However, if you paint it on top of paint, it's not going to contact the metal and it will at best come right off, at worst help trap moisture.

I painted my sub frame connectors/welds/LCA mounts, battery tray (rusted bad), radiator support, and anywhere I cut metal when i did my swap. I didnt do any prep besides knock the loose rust off.

I put about 3 coats on. Turned out great. Havent had any issues with it sticking to existing paint, or real rusty surfaces. The SFCs were Spohns, and I didnt scuff them much at all. Just alittle to take off loose surface rust. Didnt have any issues with it sticking to the smoother surface of the SFC.

Bottom line, I love the stuff. I use it every chance I get, and will continue to use it. Yes it is alittle pricey. But with all the stuff I painted I didnt even use 1/4 of the can yet. It covers so well.

Yea im not sure what the other people are talking about with not painting over painted surfaces, I've painted over many already painted surfaces some cleaned with metal ready some with out and have had ZERO problems and its been on for over 2 years now.

Re: Ever use POR-15 ?

Por15 is great, but I refuse to buy from a company that's only form of marketting is setting up FAKE enthusiast sites that only have two articles, one of which is a shining review of por15.

Haha I dont care if they advertise that a sweat shop puts on the lids! Its still the best stuff out there.

What is this site that you are talkin about? Is it on POR 15's homepage? Maybe people just dont know about it thats why there is no attention? If I started my own website for my products Ide sure as heck make sure the first post was about how great my stuff is! hehe.

Re: Ever use POR-15 ?

I used POR15 on the 84Z rear end I have in my car now and it looks great and seems like it works fine but the rear end didn't have much rust on it to begin with and I took a tire wheel to it and got everything off and I live in GA where rust really isn't a problem anyway. One day when I can do an LS1 swap in my car I'm going to paint the undercarriage but I'm going to use Rustoleum since it's cheaper, gets the job done just as well, and it comes in a spray can.

I did not order the catalog but did find out that a local auto body shop sales a whole lineup of por-15 products so that is were I am going to get it. Hey I was wondering could I prep my car with marine clean and metal ready one day and paint it the next day or is it best to paint it right after it is prepped?
