Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

To attach your ground effects? Did it work or did they come off?

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

i used velcro to put mine on, but it seems to be coming loose as you can see the velcro which makes it cheap looking.

wish there was another way for them to stay on.

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

I know there is a kind of double-sided tape that body shops use. It's supposed to be good stuff but I'm not sure what's the real name of it or if it's something you can buy at Pep Boys?

I got double-sided tape that I used for glass and mirrors. I wonder if it's the same stuff more or less?

No kidding! It's gotta be the same stuff or worse then what I have at my shop. I have 3M double-sided tape for glass. It's used to hold glass bevels on glass most of the time. It's like goop man, once it melts it will outlast us. Who knows, maybe I'll do the experiment and report. Is the Wal-mart stuff about two inches thick?

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

I have used a double sided tape made by a company called Kent you can get it at most body shops but its pricey. $40.00 for a good size roll. Its available up to 2 inches wide and it hold up well, bigger money. Just hit your local body shop and see if they will sell you a roll.

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

We use 3M double sided tape at the shop I work at. The double sided tape is great for moldings, emblems, things that don't weigh much...and things like that. I wouldn't use the tape to hold ground effects on....

Take a good look at the picture. They are already bolted on there. I was just curious and asking since I saw so many posts on it. I agree. I would probably only use the double-sided tape to hold up lightweight stuff. I was trying to find out from anyone who had experience at this one and how it went.

I don't however, see why it wouldn't be a problem for the door panel part of the ground effects considering they would need a bit of a seal anyway to keep water out.

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

I don't really see why anyone would want to tape their gfx on... With all the exposure to the elements... They wouldn't last long.

But if for some reason it was a temp fix, all I can say is don't get cheap tape... Cause the $10 you save is not worth what could happen if they fall off.

I bought cheap spray adhesive for a project... I learned my lesson, had to redo all of it with good 3M stuff like 2 weeks later... Don't waste your time!!!

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

I would imagine the double sided thin 3M trim adhesive is not to only hold on the ground efx. I bought some and plan on using it because the ground efx have slightly warped or seem like they bowed in where they bolt up. I'm only using the stuff to help make the ground efx look more flush and not bowed in where the bolts pull in the brackets.

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

No, the stuff I have at the shop is not for automotive. The double-sided stuff you need is clearly labled "acrylic" double-sided and it comes from 1/2"-2" and is available in regular and "very hi-bond" aka the expensive stuff. It's also only .045" thick which means it would probably give anyone the proper seal that they are looking for.

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

I would not do it. Consider the wind when driving at highway speed plust those ground effects do a lot of flexing. My body shop justmade new brackets for my car out of sheet metal when they re attached them after painting.

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

I don't think double-sided tape is intended to be used to totally hold down ground effects. I think Firebat is looking to use it to seal the holes created by warping of the ground effects due to old age.

I don't see why the tape wouldn't work just fine in addition to screwing it on. Afterall, the ground effects still screw on the sides and the bottom. To not use some type of screws would be, well, rice!

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

Many body kits just use double-sided tape, no bolts. And I'm not taking about r i c e r stuff.

They did a OEM kit, turning a regular Rustang, into a Corba Rustang. All it was was double sided tape on some parts.

Use good stuff, like 3M, not Home Depot of Lowes, and you'll be fine. Don't cheap out!

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

No way man! I wouldn't do that. I think the 3M acrylic stuff costs me about $30 wholesale for the hi-bond stuff but I'm not sure until I get to my shop.

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

In my experience the 3m double sided tape has worked awesome for anything i've used it on, (and nearly impossible to get off afterwards). Go for it, just use enough of it. dont skimp.

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

The 3M body and trim stuff is what you’re looking for, it’s grey with a red, peal off backing. Lots of aftermarket stuff, especially truck stuff is held on with the stuff, as well as a lot of factory trim and body cladding.

If you’re worried about strength, 3M makes a prep for it that acts as a cleaner/degreaser + primer.

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

The 3m is great. I put my emblems on with it. One was a metal one and it is holding like a bolt is holding it on.

You are correct!!! It's the acrylic double-sided tape that is gray with a red backing. I have to check through my inventory sheets how much it costs but I can order it from crlaurence.com. Sorry, they only sell to wholesalers but I'm sure you can get that stuff easily anywhere.

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

You can get it at any autoparts store.

I just remembered where I got my last big roll of it… Stillen (Steve Millen Motorsports) uses it to attach their hood scoops to cover the hole left over after clearancing the hood for their blower kits.

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

Well remember, we've been talking about the "great" stuff and the great stuff is very expensive. I just checked it, it's $75 a roll.

Trust me, this stuff will outlast you!

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

$75/roll???

It depends on what you’re doing, it’s available in all sorts of sizes and adhesives, but for most stuff you can get a 50’ roll for under $10, under $25 for the serious stuff.

Just make sure you’re getting trim tape and not weatherstrip tape.

Re: Anyone ever use double-sided tape?

Negative! This is the "real" serious stuff. It is specifically made of automotive and is one inch wide. It is cheaper if you buy the 3/4" or the 1/2" but for the "very hi-bond" adhesive it's $75 a roll for the one inch and that's what I priced out. And no, this is not for weatherstripping.

Like I said, this stuff will outlast not only the car, but us as well! Only a hammer and chisel will remove these ba$tards.
