oh no.
just had someone back into me while i was parked on the side of the road in a neighborhood. This is the first major body damage that has happened to the car since i got it. Can anyone tell me the exact paint code for the car? The sticker under the center console was missing when i purchased it. Is there any other way to find out like maybe by the vin# or something? Also i just took it over to the body shop and the guy told me that it was going to cost about 450 to fix and paint the door and about 2500 to do the whole car.
I don't know if you can tell what color it is by this pic or not. its a dark red metalflake.

Re: oh no.
Sorry to hear about that. Since you have a 91, the RPO sticker should be on the lid of the locking compartment in the trunk. If the color is the original color, it's probably dark red metallic.

Re: oh no.
if the paint's still good, and the internal door structure isn't messed up, i know that there are guys, or from what i've hear, "were" guys back in the day, who could get at it from behind and make it look like it was before. try a body guy who is an older gentleman; may have the experience to do it that way. that's my .

Re: oh no.
LMAO!!!!!! paintless dent repair, are you crazy?????? looks to me that it at least needs a new door skin or a lot of patience lol.

Re: oh no.
Patience is why he's taking it to a shop in the first place. idk, but IF it's the origional paint, it would be a better way, since matching would no longer be an issue, and therefore would be cheaper, in my opinion. if you find a guy who knows what he's doing, then there shouldn't be a problem. a new painted door skin may stand out more if the rest of the paint is less than perfect. like i said before, its my personal opinion, and it depends on how the door's internals were affected. these doors are very important to prevent body flex, so it's not something to glance over. good luck with the repair, it looks like a really nice car.

Re: oh no.
I'd like to see a PDR guy go at it just for giggles. I tried having a little dent taken out that way and while it's better, I can still see it.
Also, he said the shop wanted 2500 to do the whole car, so there goes the whole keeping the original paint idea.

That really sucks.
I understand.
Sorry that your car got damaged. You'll get it fixed.
Check out my thread. It shows my car before and after the damage.

Re: oh no.
That can be done by PDR, but it will take time. The $450 estimate sounds cheap from a body shop. Crossing the body line is not an issue for PDR as I do it all the time. That's where most dents occur because the metal doesn't give like in an open area. The picture doesn't really show the extent of the damage but I'm sure a "good" PDR tech can make it look the same as it did before.
It sounds like 87 Formy hired a hack if he couldn't get the little dent out or it was in a place that isn't easily accessible. PDR might leave some imperfections that the owner might still see because he knew the damage was there but that is in extreme damage cases. I can usually tell when a bodyshop has worked a car more so than when PDR is done. The sad thing is people are more accepting of body shop imperfections than they are of PDR and at a much higher price.

Re: oh no.
I went to the body shop today and picked up my car. I couldn't be happier with it. The paint matching is amazing. it looks better then it did before it got hit.
I just have a few questions also.
1. How long do i have to wait till i put the car cover back on it?
2. How long till i can wax it.
3. When i went to pick it up, it was raining a little bit. i touched the paint and it seemed like it kinda smeared. Is it normal for the clear coat to smudge that easily? and should i try to avoid touching it?
4. Is it ok to leave the car outside in the weather because i do not have a garage. Will rain or bird crap hurt it at all?

Re: oh no.
paint dries from the outside, in.
the outside should be dry by now. avoid touching it because you will smear it as you said, its wet underneat still. its ok to leave outside, do not wash it or cover it for at least a week, preferably 2.

Re: oh no.
Don't wax it for about a month and I would not buff it for at least 4-5 weeks....although others will tell you to buff it sooner err on the long side of caution....and try to get the car inside for the next week as much as possible....no car cover yet..it will beat the paint up

Re: oh no.
Do not wax ot use a car cover for a few months. That will seal the paint and cause it not to cure properly. The best person to ask though, would be your painter. Every time someone asks those questions around here, every post has a different answer.

Re: oh no.
Thanks for all help guys. I appreciate it.
It did smear in about 3 or 4 spots where i touched it. When i do wax it again will i be able to set the smear marks off, or are they there permanently now?
