Re: Some more work done and more to come

For those of you have wanted to see the progress of installing a cowl hood scoop on a fiberglass hood here is some more progress. here's what i have done I am by no means a body man and Honestly I hate body work too dusty and I have to work twice as hard to get it right because of my lack of knowledge on the subject. But 500 for a cowl hood wasn't in my budget so getting a scoop for $58.00 was the next best thing even tho after i ordered the scoop i saw a 6 inch pin on for $125.00 but he never got back to me. anyways here's what i have done..
1, Measure to get the scoop centered and lined up where you want it .
2, mark where the scoop is and grind the paint off in the areajust around where the scoop fits
3, drilled 4 holes in each corner through the hood and scoop and rivet scoop to the hood.
4, then drilled holes every 2 inchs down both sides and the front edges and riveted the scoop totaly to the hood
5, layup a layer of fiberglass around the perimeter of the scoop attaching the scoop to the hood.
6, lay bondo over the seam feathering it out a few inchs extra and to gradually transition from the hoods height to the scoops lip height.
7, sand
8 bondo
9, sand
10, bondo
11, sand you get the idea for those of you that are good at body work you might be able to do it in less steps of bondo and sanding.
12, filler primer/sealer

SO far i have half of the scoop done in bondo and the other half is still in the fiberglass stage. i did that for picture purposes. here's the photos..

there already is a hole under there the air cleaner sticks through the hood. the Big Block has a semi high rise intake on it.

Re: Some more work done and more to come

Why not buy an actual one piece cowl hood? What you ended up with is ok i guess but it doesn't match the hood lines at all. Kind of the Corky life goes on version of a cowl hood. It's too high and narrow but your actual work putting it on is really nice.

Re: Some more work done and more to come

Nope the motor isn't stroked. all i know about the motor. I got it from a family friend. It use to be in his back halfed 75 vega and ran a best of 9.50 in the 1/4 It was pulled and became his backup motor. sat in a garage for many years. I picked it up in November for $2000.00. from what i was told it has 6500.00 in machine work done to it. the pistons are 11 to 1 and with the heads on the motor. it's ratio is now 13.5 to 1 the cam is a lunati thats spelled wrong. it has a torker intake and a 980 holley. the cam specs are ? I was told it's over 600 lift and over 300 duration. the setup that was in the vega was this motor a th400 with a 3500 stall and the gears were 4.56. the block is a 73 pass car block and the heads if I remember are 427 can't remember the year. I know on the heads it says Hipo cast into them. the cam is a solid lift and has roller rockers. I have put an MSD streetfire billit distributor accel v groove plugs.

as for the hood Like i had said I didn't have the budget to spend $500 on a cowl hood I have 5 kids to support and a wife and this car hobby. This scoop was $58.00 its 40 inchs at the base and 4 inch's tall and 24 inch's wide it was advertised as a 44 inch scoop I should have bought the 49 inch which would have given me the 45 inch's at the base not the 40 I ended up with. but Oh well it's not like i can drive this on the street anyways. here's a pic of the motor with the covers off
Casting Number off the block 3999289 454 1972-1979 Two-bolt
If i read it from another pic correctly

Re: Some more work done and more to come

why do paople nit pick about a cowl hood? id rather spend 60 bucks instead of 500 bucks anyday (which is why i did). just wanted to say thanks for all the pictures and stuff. i had a pretty good idea of how i wanted to do mine and your gave me more ideas and gives me something to look forward to

what size rivets did you use? i have a 5/8 head on my rivets, not sure if theyre to big or not.

Re: Some more work done and more to come

damn 2k for that!!?? thats a freakin steal! better beef up the rear end, an add some sfc's with that combo.

i lucked out with my hood, i got a brand new harwood 4in cowl for $150 and $70 in gas to pick it up. before i found that, i was gonna take this route and save a bit. i couldnt pass up the harwood tho.

btw p100ki shut ur pie hole, it looks fine.

Re: Some more work done and more to come

Thank you all I like to hear other's like what i did and if it helps someone do it for themselfs then it's even better. I like to help and if the instructions and photos help someone do there's then it is worth it. everyone has different tastes and to p100ki if he doesn't like it thats his taste and he isn't wrong for that I wouldn't have a gold car with black strips down the sides of my hood but thats his taste and he isn't wrong for it. as for my car man it has been fun it has been frustrating, I have laughed, gotton mad, gotton disappointed and all during the build. But it all goes away the first time you turn the key and it comes to life and moves under its own power. there is things that i still have to do Like the sfc change rebuild beef up the rear end and also have to finish welding one of the bars on the roll bar I ran out of wire. I will need to change to a 3500 stall in the trans it doesn't like to idle in gear wants to die. and of course tune But i can't do that until i get an exhaust on the car right now i am running the patriot shorty headers and it's loud and I have a feeling the neigbors are going to get upset soon. But i do hope everyone enjoys seeing a 3rd gen get saved from a field and rebuild. I have owned many over the years this is my first iroc and now my first big block.

Re: Some more work done and more to come

I forgot to say this isn't my only hot rod either. 2 years ago I bought a car that has had almost every part of it replaced. except the body fuel tank and lines and interior . granted it's not a 3rd gen and it almost blashamy to own both a 3rd gen camaro and Mustang It started out as a 2001 v6 automatic. it now has roush stage 3 springs adr 18x10 in the rear and 18x8 in the front spintech side exhaust an 8.8 rear with 3.55 gears a 2003 4.6 auto witha roush cai and a snyper tune it has roush gauge cluster floor mats toolbox in the trunk painted body color dash panels and door panels a gt scoop on the hood was added Roush stage 3 body kit and spoiler. Autometer gauges and pods Billet accents to the center console and custom graphics that i did myself. the body stripes honeycombed taillights and all roush graphics on the windows and wheels and trunk it had a red top battery. bfg 275/35/18 in the rear and 245/40/18 up front

Like i said man, the work you put into it is great. Not my style but it suits it's purpose and i can definitely appreciate that. A shot out in the sun from a straighter angle would be a better picture i think. It's probably not as boxy in real life.

As far as not driving on the street you'd be surprised what you can drive on the street if you keep off the loud pedal. Fifteen years ago i daily drove a ten second Chevelle.
