Re: repainting car

Well, depending on the quality of their work and what type of paint their using (flakes, pearls, etc) that sounds about right. Painting a car the right way takes alot of work and time, more than most people can even comprehend and there is a high material cost involved.

Re: repainting car

god wish some people live closer because personally i would do this for so much cheaper and my paint jobs turn out great in my opinion. if you were closer to me i would do this for about 3 500 or maybe even 3 grand depending on the amount of work. i usually do them in a booth too.

Re: repainting car

It's certainly possible to spend 6 grand and more on a paint job. What you see as a couple rust spots may be replacing both quarter panels to a bodyshop and to do even a nice basic job means to take every part off that touches the paint ... ground effects, bumpers, handles, locks, mouldings, mirrors, lights ... everything! Then you start with the repair and prep work. Add on 1200 to 1500 for materials and there you go ... 6 grand. But, is that what every shop in your area is going to charge? Probably not. Keep looking. Good luck.

Re: repainting car

i paid 2400. found a local guy who does jobs on the side. talk with everyone in automotive around your area. go to car cruise in's. talk to people there. find someone with a good rep and prior work phptos. you can still get a good paint job at a good price. i would have sucked it up and gotten a 6k job but i plan on driving mine too much. i would cry everytime i hit a rock.

Ya look around. $6K is normal but there are always people looking for extra work on the side. You can get the $6K job for $3K usually if you bust your butt and look around.

Re: repainting car

A lot depends on where you live as well. If you live in cali, with the restrictions they have; you're screwed. That being said, If you have an automotive tech school nearby, talk to them Usually you can get an honors student to do it or the teacher for a demo for the cost of materials and a small donation. The Maaco places are fine if you go in and actually talk to them about doing something more than a wipe n spray job. Those guys are good at laying paint, they get the cost down by skimping on prep, so if you TALK to them, they'll certainly turn out a good car. Doing your own minor bodywork is definitely a help as well.

Re: repainting car

So i went back up there today to find out what was taking them so long to get a estimate on my car and they called back and said 8.2 grand i think i about crapd my self...didnt really what need to be done adds up to that much...does that sound bit steep to you guys?

Also i looked at that Maaco thing the closest one was in montana...also I live in North Dakota if any of you are near by and have had your car painted by a respectable and decent price ect lemme know maybe lay off time i can go there and have them do it

If its a daily driver car then just get a maaco paint job. Who in the right mind is going to pay 8.2$ for a paint job that wont be a show car? screw that.

Re: repainting car

My response? Hit up the www.autobody101.com forums and make some friends there. 8200 is a LOT; although you DID mention needing 'dents removed, rust, and (something with) the mirrors. Perhaps you could post some pics and we could give you more advice??

if you live in california you can get some of the mexicans to help strip and sand. they need the work, but pay them a decent rate.
i use them all the time - they are always hard workers, nice people, and do the job you tell them to do.
since my car needs a clear coat i will need a place to let it sit for a few days to dry and do a final sanding to take out all the ripples.
then back to the booth and clear coat and let set for a week to make sure gets really dry.
you can buy the paint and primer for a camaro for less than 600.00.
so you can get a 6,000.00 paint job for about 1,200.00.

That sounds a little high, I'd figure on about 4500,but it depends on what they're doing.

Re: repainting car

Man, I just got a DAMN nice black base/clear paint job with a fair amount of body work for less than $1,500 at a local body shop. If you want a show car, sure ... pay the $8k. If you plan on driving it AT ALL, you can go much cheaper for nice paint. Here's a link to my re-build thread with some paint photos:

Keep in mind, they are going to have to stand behind the job. I have never seen paint do that before. looks real bad. Probably just needs to be stripped-big job.

Mine was similar in spots (check the thread). Not quite as bad. And it is being backed by the body shop.

Re: repainting car

Alrighty i got my car back today and took it to another bodyshop that i went and talked to last week. They also quoted me around 8 grandish aswell. She said something about on the passenger side where that paint was cracking is where the bondo it self actually started to crack and break, said body work was gonna run around 4.5grand and 4kish for paint job!?!?!?!!??!!? Looks like im either waiting till a car show comes up this fall and talk with people there or just keep searching and find some.

Re: repainting car

Why not start the sanding and such yourself even throw on some primer till you can find that guy who will do a good inexpensive paint job. Then all he has to do is a quick sanding and lay paint, not too much work for him, so a better price.....Anyone step in and correct me if im wrong.

Re: repainting car

Make friends in the community, find a guy that can do body work then ask him to show you how to do things in exchange for dinner and beer. Thats honestly how Ive done most the stuff on my 'maro. Ask for help and offer pizza and beer, most will help. Thats my Its always better to learn and do it myself, even if their are little imperfections, she is my baby Good luck and best wishes!!!!

Re: repainting car

just for info. . black is the hardest color to paint & look straight & even . shows every wrinkle & small dent . with out good prep. on a paint job you are urinating into the wind . unless you are looking for a show car re-paint the same color it is now . saves a ton of work on jams , etc. . also if you are on a budget ( i am ) consider a school project . if you have the time , i have seen great paint jobs from some schools . good luck .
