Painting car...

After the winter I am painting the car... I am torn between 3 colors and I don't know which one would look best.

Here's the car, I have iroc rims for it they just aren't on it in this picture:

My three choices are:

This Orange:

Electric Blue or Black.

I'm really leaning to orange, might leave the cowl hood flat black too. Ideas?

Re: Painting car...

Hmm, depends on how unique you want car to be. Black is a great color for thridgens so can't go wrong. 3rdgens did come in blue but not electric blue so that would make car a little more special. Orange was never a factory option and would definitely make car stand out since very little cars in general are orange. I really don't care for orange but color in pic is nice. Also I would paint hood gloss black. Flat black would make car seem unfinished.

Re: Painting car...

Just my opinion but I would say stay away from the orange. Although it does add originality, it does stand out. Standing out is not always what you want. Especially with the cops. Regardless i am not fond of the orange.

Re: Painting car...

The car is getting painted for next to nothing, if not for free. A buddy that works at a body shop told me if I assemble the top end of his new motor he'll paint it for free.

As far as standing out, I'm not sure if this is going to be much of a street car, it stuck out like a sore thumb with the mildly built 305, I can't imagine what cops will think when they hear the big block idling at a traffic light... and I'm not sure I want to find out.

Re: Painting car...

ORANGE, ORANGE, ORANGE. Go with ORANGE. Yeah 3rdgens look good in black and blue but they are so common. Do something out of the ordinary. That along with black stripes and you'll be good to go.

Re: Painting car...

That car screams "BLACK". With that hood and a big block and a nice stance . Throw some fat 295/50r15s on the back with some nice chrome wheels and your set.Talk about bad to the bone!!
(Be sure to paint it all including the hood).

Re: Painting car...

if you change the original color you gotta paint the door jams and
the doghouse and anywhere else the original paint exists or she will
be coyote ugly- black is bad @$$ and so you must see if it really suits
your image- is that who you want to be? black is not necessarily even a color
if you want color pick a color- i dig the orange but i would never drive an orange one
blue seems to me to be a ford color-pardon my french
my RS is white-the arctic white always looks good on a Z
yet again it is not -----color------competition orange hmmm how 'bout yellow?!!!
I see there's a nice silver one with shaved doors on ebay

lose the side mouldings, decals and pin stripping
and put a high deck 91-92 Z28 spoiler on her to
match the height of the hood

Re: Painting car...

Im really feelin that orange!! Also consider the condition of the body and the amount of time your body shop buddy is really going to put in to pull off a gloss black paint job tastefully. If your car is straight as an arrow or your buddy will put in the time with the long board to get it there, then yes definitly go black. If not.. dont even consider it!
just my

Re: Painting car...

Is that orange a custom metallic like TangeYellow or Manderin Candy?
Those 2 I've heard are great for attention at shows & cruise-ins.
Like any color, done right it'll look good.
The photo looks good.

Cops will take note of a clean freshly painted 3rd gen regardless of color IMO. They sure got to know me fast when I was young in mine while it was white!

That said, I wouldn't worry too much about what cops think when picking a color. Hell if that was such a big concern, we'd see nothing but black, brown, and grey cars on the roads. It's a one time thing so pick a color that will truly make you happy! I PERSONALLY am an orange guy (lol), and love bright colors. Everyone says reds and oranges win car shows too. I also love a clean jet black car myself, but there are a lot of them, and it will show the smallest imperfections. Anyways, good luck with the decision!
