Steering Wheel
I have the big ugly steering wheel with the air bag in it and I was wondering if it was possible to yank the thing out and stick a nice Grant GT wheel on there. Would this involve alot of work and is my current wheel worth anything to a shop/scrapyard??

Sell them on eBay. TONS of people shop on eBay. I was selling a fiberglass hood on there, and only expected to get 150 bucks for it. It sold for $295!!!!! It's amazing what these people will pay for stuff. Hope this helps.

I've been thinking the same thing. But before you take that air-hag out, don't forget to disconnect the battery. If that thing goes off, it could ram any tools you are holding up your nose :-(

If the car came with an airbag it is illegal to remove it when it comes time to sell the car. If you change the wheel, save the original because you will have to put it back on before selling the car.

I was looking into this, too... haven't done it yet, though. There is a really good article on removing it, in the tech section.
I've been told, however, that airbags have to be "serviced" every 10 years...which on My 91' is coming up real soon. So, I don't know how much an airbag that's about to need servicing is worth. I put My air bag and steering wheel in the thirdgen classifieds and got no response, at all.
I did call My local GM dealer to price them new, though.. steering wheel AND airbag was like over $1000! anyway.. the tech article tells You all You need to know about removing it.

Well now... any of you guys gonna sell your steering wheel or not? I'm looking for another one... Gotta be in "premium" condition (leather). That's all that's wrong with mine - leather looks like crap, but if it's true you can't legally sell the car without it, maybe we could make a trade along with some cash so you'd still have one if you ever sell your car... I'm just trying to "restore" some of my stuff, so would be interested in a really good wheel... Any takers, let me know...

I liked the 3 spoke GT style wheel that I had on my '87 2.8 better than the air bag one but one thing's for sure, insurance for my L03 is LESS than the insurance for my 2.8!! 20 bucks less but still, just because it has an airbag. I wouldn't mind a different wheel but I'm perfectly happy with this one. It has great spots for my fingers, when I'm turning the wheel and for driving (about 300 miles/wk).
I'd check with your insurance company before you do the switch to see if it would affect your rates. Not to mention that they might not cover your medical expenses if they found out later that the airbag that was OEM in the car was taken out; somthing to think about...

Totalled it but saved a bunch of parts before it went to the junk yard.

My airbag kinda uh..deployed when the previous owner clipped a pole. Is there somewhere you can take that to get it fixed, or do you have to buy a completely new one? And will it pass inspection w/o it? If i have to get it fixed, does anyone have ANY idea how much $$ i'm lookin at here?

I've heard that it costs a good bit to get one put back together. I still want to sell mine and I really like the old style thirdgen wheel way better. Lemme' know if You're interested in mine. It has a slight split in the center of it, but not noticable at all. A steering wheel puller is only like $5, so I'm ready to do it anytime. I've been thining about just getting a cheapie wheel at the auto store... but I'd rather have the old thirdgen style.

Just FYI, a non airbag firebird steering wheel wont' fit on a airbag steering column. I pulled the wheel on my 91 firebird and went to install a wheel from a 86 firebird and the diameter of the collar ont he steering wheel, and the column are different sizes, and they also rub together. In addition the shaft in the column isn't long enough for the older style wheel and retainer. An aftermarket wheel may work, but I havent tried it yet.
If anyone wants a Firebird Airbag and steering wheel shoot me an email.
