Porsche 996 Turbo brakes on Camaro

Hi,
This is a long term project for me on my '92 RS. Pretty much everything I do is long term, life, kids, work and all that! Oh and a '96 TT Supra (sorry!). I wanted better brakes on the car, lets be honest, they aren't great. Ok for driving around town, but repeated hard stops and the standard brakes fade like hell. Partly because I drive it like I stole it and the road layout here in the UK, ie. lots of bends and roundabouts. Having seen all the other setups on the board I thought it was time I put something together. The set up (front) is based around a pair of Brembo 996 turbo calipers with 993 turbo discs. The reason for the different discs is that they have a slightly smaller diameter to fit under my wheels. But luckily they have an identical pad area and thickness as the 996 discs.

The project is not finished but virtually all of the machining has been done. I just needed to try it on the car to make sure it fits. I'll get the discs skimmed, install longer ARP studs and powdercoat the brackets, lines done etc. I probably could have taken an easier route and put 1LE or similar stuff on, but I only do things the hard way! Heres a few pics to show my progress so far.

Re: Porsche 996 Turbo brakes on Camaro

I have seen a couple of setups using 993 TT calipers. They are both radial mount calipers, but the 996TT ones are larger and are monoblock. If that don't stop it I give up! I need to get some on the back now, but all the Porsche calipers I've seen don't have a parking brake, so maybe a Wilwood 1 could be used. Could never get any pictures of the other setups of the brackets etc.

I thought it was gonna be a PITA to fit it all on, but it went on easily.

Thats why I put pictures of the brackets and spacers on. TBO I got the calipers and discs pretty cheap on Ebay, and the machining was done for a favour making it worth doing.

Re: Porsche 996 Turbo brakes on Camaro

What are you doing to upgrade the master cylinder/proportioning valve?

Re: Porsche 996 Turbo brakes on Camaro

For the master cylinder I have a spare 4 wheel disc one with the larger 1" piston. Which I believe is the same size as the Porsche original. For the proportioning valve Ive got a Summit adjustable one to get the balance correct. I think a friend told me I would need to run it on the brake testing rollers at an MOT station (annual roadworthy test station here in the UK), to get the correct balance.

Well done Neil. Nice setup. When is the car going to be ready to hit the strip/track?

Re: Porsche 996 Turbo brakes on Camaro

Nice, I was thinking of using a Cayenne Turbo setup, they use 355-380mm rotors and have monster calipers. How hard was it getting the brembos to work on our spindles? Similar to the Vette ones?
