Straight, cutoff wheel, hand cuts? I'm wondering how accurate cuts like that would be, regarding balance. If if is even slightly larger on one side vs the others, the balance at speed could be very noticeable, like an unbalanced tire would be.

Um...is it me or is there a big chunk of metal missing? If so....FAIL FAIL FAIL!
No wonder 3rdgen owners have a rep for being trashy hack jobs who wear ******s listening to Whitesnake...
That is beyond shady tree backyard mechanics, that's beyond a safety issue.
Please stay away from Philly, I won't want you to lose a wheel and crash into my non-hack job car.

Re: my LS1 homemade brake install
i used the torch to cut out the brackets. all the bolts are grade 8. i don't think the hub will be out of balance. i think the symmetrical cuts are mostly cosmetic. nobody would buy a hub that looks like it was cut by hand. if i have a problem i'll just make another one. thanks for the feedback guys.
Take those hubs and throw them in the trash. You're at the worst going to kill yourself/someone else or at the least going to have a nasty vibration.
Put the stupid cutting torches and grinder away. Put your new hubs on a lathe and do it the right way. There is a reason that every person thats done the hybrid brakes has a round hub. Look around, you're the one kid thats not like the other....
Looking at the hubs makes me wonder what the spindles look like.
Seriously, take this advice.

Re: my LS1 homemade brake install
aside from the weird hexagon shaped hub, there isnt enough metal left around the wheel studs for my taste. That really could come apart. Seriously, modified hubs are 75bux.

Re: my LS1 homemade brake install
thanks for all the feedback. that one hub was mainly for mock-up. on the other hand i'm sure the department of transportation would not approve any modification of this caliber to the brake system anyway. if someone has the credentials i'd like to see them. the only way i could see this being approved by DOT is an entirely new spindle with the caliper mounting pad cast in. for those children who are members of this forum (and only the children, you know who you are) don't worry. one day you may mature into an adult.

I think its more blunt advice than anything. "Mock up" or not....get those things into the trash....they are unsafe!

Re: my LS1 homemade brake install
For reference, I did this exact upgrade on my own to my own car using info provided on this board. Always do your homework on mods, and just about when you think you know everything there is to know about a mod, go ahead and research some more. You will save time and money.

you really need to take a set back, take a deep breath and relax. We are trying to help and offer helpful advice. we dont want to see you hurt yourself or somebody else with a poorly modified part. Just looking out for you.

Re: my LS1 homemade brake install
Some things are worth paying for,..... In this example we all in agreement; play it safe and pay for the hubs.
If your going to drill/tap the holes in the Spindles to accept larger bolts for the caliper brackets - be sure that they are drilled/tapped at the proper angle......... If not the caliper mounting bracket will not sit properly when mounted in relation to the rotor. Then the caliper is wrong, the pads are wrong, and catastrophic brake failure is imminent.
