1989 PBR Rear - What Brakes were on the Front?

I have a rear axle out of a 1989. These are the PBR discs. What was the matching front brake rotor size and caliper for this year?

The swap will be going into a 1985 front disc, rear drum set up.
Thanks in advance.

If it was a 1LE car 12" rotor and 2 piston PBR caliper
If it wasn't a 1LE car,(mostlikely) it has the stock 10.5 rotor and single piston caliper.

Thanks for your response. Guess it is decision time to find a good matching front system.

Re: 1989 PBR Rear - What Brakes were on the Front?

Your factory fronts you already have 99 percent what was in the car those rear brakes came from.

I forget the actual production numbers, but every disc brake rear from 89 to 92 got those PBR brakes, but the numbers of 1LE cars are a tiny fraction of the number of cars with disc rear brakes.

The 11.8~ rear rotors with 10.5" front rotors was stock on the VAST majority of them. I know it's weird, but it's the way it was.

You can go to a 1LE system if you want, but most people go to the LS1 brake setup. I prefer it just because the parts are a lot easier to get a hold of and it's usually a bit cheaper. The LS1 brake upgrade requires the removal of the factory steering stops which is kind of annoying in a lot of ways. The C5 brakes on the other hand will allow you to keep the bump stops, but wont fit inside 16" wheels. (only 1LE brakes will fit inside 16" crosslace wheels, by the way)

13" C4 HD brakes will fit in the 16" IROCs as well.

Re: 1989 PBR Rear - What Brakes were on the Front?

Hi. Noobie, here. Will the PBR rear calipers from the 89-92's fit on the 87's? Is it a drop in replacement or is there some changes that have to be made?

Re: 1989 PBR Rear - What Brakes were on the Front?

Calipers do not interchange.

From the point of view of a completely stripped-down naked rear end housing however, they are interchangeable. (backing plate, caliper carrier, caliper, parking brake cable, rotor, steel lines, hoses) Not one single piece is the same between the crappy 10½" Delco-Moraine crap and the 12" PBRs.

9-bolt & 10-bolt backing plates are different, all other parts are the same.

Welcome to TGO, formula. If you're discussing rear brakes, check the following link:

Re: 1989 PBR Rear - What Brakes were on the Front?

Assuming the 10.5" iron caliper with the aluminum PBRs on the back.
If so, this will be easier and I can do a front brake upgrade at a later date.
Thanks

It works fine. That's how many cars came from the factory. I have the original pads from my 89. 50% remaining.
You pay for shipping, the pads are free.
