Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

I just picked up my camaro a few weeks back and i wasn't going to put my system in it because i figured the car wouldn't hold up too well to bass. Has anybody else done it? It's 2 12" American Bass xfl's in a 4.3 cube box at 32 hz. It metered a 146 on about 1000 watts out of the trunk of my 4 door cavalier. The subs are 1000 rms each so it was basically half power lol If i put it in the camaro ill be putting full power to them.

Even with the t-tops? I broke off the latch for my sunroof on my old truck with bass so i don't want that happening with t-tops

Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?-image-1180379467.jpg

This is enough for me ... 2 competition mid-bass drivers 6*9's .... Haha ppl ask me if I have a 10" hid under the seat all the time .... I didn't want 150lbs of speaker in the back so this is what I did .. They only weigh 14 lbs (heavy for 6 by 9) apiece plus my little custom box I made only weighs about 20

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

We have done four 15"s in the back of a Camaro before, tbh its a pain In the a$$, I wouldn't recondmend it, but to each there own..

It was loud as frawk, would flip coins a good 4"s in the air when set on the roof, biggest problem he had at competitions was the rear hatch glass flexing out, nothing like a couple guys on either side of the car pushing to hold the side of the glass in

It was a 1990 Iroc L98 G92 car, the stereo made it handle like crap, visability was bad too, but surprisingly he only lost half a second in the 1/4, I would of thought more

Two 15's I have done many times, not so bad

Two 12's...1000 watts...yada, yada, it's been done before.

If you're afraid your car can't handle it....don't do it.

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

it can take the XFL's. I ran a 18" btl on 2 AP3000 @ .7ohms per amp. had the enclosure on the back seat facing the hatch. Ridiculous bass, yes. Not worth all the weight. TA/Camaro's car frequency peaks around 38-44 hz. if your trying to build a enclosure for the trunk well. fiberglassed the bottom portion and birch for the baffle. you can get almost 5 cubic feet before sub and port displacement. I would love to see the xfl's in there tuned to 33hz

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

Ive thrown my pics up a few times, so ill do it again for s&g. Info: 4 L5 twelves in 12.5cf @ 32hz on 4k watts, soon to be 6 on 6k. Two alts (second in air pump loc). 2 agm batts. Four 8", four 6x9s on 800w.
The T's take a beating but hold fine.
Look in my album, my phones being a b***ch right now not letting me attatch files.

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

The three ideas for bass is directly behind the seat (single 10 or 12 in a ported box that is tuned), in the trunk as a lot of the above posters did (two 10's two 12's or single 15 (typically seal boxes due to not having the room to properly tune), or face the subwoofers downward in the trunk with a ported box (not alot of boxes are able to do this, two 10's are probably the best idea here) but by doing this you lose SPL but gain dB (ideal for lower wattage situations).

Actually spl is measured in db,don't confuse anyone.

Sound quality and how loud the sound is, are two different things.

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

Back in the day, I did 6 12's in a Camaro. The car was sick loud. It actually stress fractured the rear glass. The only thing that kept it together was the tint, I'd imagine. That was back when I ran a car audio shop.....late nineties. Aaaah, those were they days! Lol

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

No kidding, what happened to the big systems? If i could take a step back in time with this car to '94 when I graduated, I'd be surrounded by others who love(d) big bass, now people just want prefab boxes and stock located upgrades. Rants and raves, i guess.
I'm just happy that I try to keep it alive.

Oh, and to all bassers... I was pulled over the other day by an officer who said he was at a stoplight by me the other day(off duty and on the other side of the intersection) just to ask that I try to be more mindfull of others and not crank it, he said he felt like his truck was falling apart.(lol)
They are out there even if not under a light bar.

Here in Boise,Id., we have a 50ft-24/7 law that has cost me $165 plenty enough times to be grateful of the warning.

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

When I bought my car it came with a custom box for 2 12" subs. I took the box out, cut it in half and I now have 1 pioneer tsw309d2 in my car with a Belva 540w RMS amp. It POUNDS bass. I feel that the way the car is shaped actually makes the bass louder, but maybe it's just me haha

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

I got a question. Thought I’d jump in on this since there’s some experts in this post and I like what I see. Post not hijacked, promise cause were talking 15’s here and how much the back window can take.

What do you guys think of the 1st generation 15” Cerwin Vega Stroker? I have a fresh rebuilt dual VC in my closet going up against a new in box Hifonics that when bridged 2 ohm, will give the Stroker 1,700 watts. I went thru a divorce and the car is down for now, so projects are on hold. Its been a long term goal (ever since high school – hahaah I’m almost 38) to get this set up in my Trans AM. Now that I’m kinda into canyons and handling, wondering if this is too much bass, will it even sound good as Vega’s always need tons of box space and if the car will handle like junk with all the additional weight.

True!

The shape of the car with the hatchback produces a "folded horn" design when you put subs in the trunk well. Think of it as a Cerwin Vega bass bin in your car...

Car audio technology has made HUGE leaps in the last 15 years and there are better subs that are fairly inexpensive. Have you thought about a 12" ported?

Time to upgrade.

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

Ahh chit. True that. I guess it’s just one of those silly things. I’ve had me late model 12” Fosgates, Kenwoods, Pioneers and I guess the old Strokers are a lil outdated. I’m just thinking I actually have enough power to push the thing, why not. It may be more of a hassle then its worth.

I guess I’m looking to show off and be loud in the Trans Am, not so much for actual musical enjoyment. I got me a late model Bonneville with two Pioneers sharing 500W RMS. I got he quality system in there. I may seek out a 3rd 12” matching Pioneer and run those in the TA. It will be a lil more modern and I’m sure will hit deep.

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

Your answer is yes, the glass will take it. The hatch latch may not internally. If you have the electric motorized hatch be aware the worm gears are nylon and can strip. If yours is mechanical then make sure the bolts holding it on are tight and loctited so that the constant vibration doesnt make it move in its adjustment slots.
Its very common to put 1-2 tens or twelves down in the hatch well.
2 fifteens on the hump in a ported mini wall i have seen and heared, as well as 2 ported 12s
4 twelves ported in a full wall i have done in mine, first Kicker CVRs, then L5s, now its 6-L5s.
Last year i had planned to drop Kicker and pick up DC Soundlabs, i wanted to do 4 fifteens on their 5k with a secondary 18v system, found i needed 16+ cf gross. Its doable with a flat face wall. Of which i dont like, also doesnt leave room for amp placement.

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

After many years of loud systems in my cars I've discovered that panels and parts eventually become loose and start to rattle. Any car can take that much base especially with the windows down. personally I like it loud but clear no rattles. The Camaro I had before with 2-12" subs powered with 1000 watts each was annoying with the rattles of license plates and panels. I settled more for clarity and room. System now supports 2-10's 2-6x9's 2-5" and 2-4x6's all JL Audio. Total wattage 1500. It is now loud and clear. Also I now have functional space which is limited already in the hatch. Hears an older pic with older speakers and amp but box design remains.

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

You're not doing 146db at 32hz on 1000 watts, absolutely impossible.

18" FI BTL at 3300 watts with line driver, 3 batteries and high output alternator and metered at 148.8 at 38hz.

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

i have older Alpine Type R subs (12") with a 2000 watt amp. friends have told me they could feel the ground shaking when i was a block away. used to show off with the old hat trick, i'd take off my hat, have them hold it between the driver's and passenger's seats and feel the amount of air pushed by the subs, you could feel the hat move in your hand. i could get a lot better sound out if i upgraded my amp. but that'll be down the road since this one still works lol

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

Im hoping to have big bass in my car by summer. Right now I have a small 250w rms JL Audio monoblock powering 2 12" JL subs @ 2ohms, BUT by summer that will be replaced by a Sundown SAE1000D pushing 2 Sundown E12 subs for 1200w RMS @ 1ohm. It's going to be like going from an iron duke 4cyl to an LS6 overnight.

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

Honestly with Todays technology 50's are pretty easy to obtain. In a small car like the Camaro and having an open cabin makes it that much easier even.

i agree , back when i was competing 150db was so hard to hit , today it seems its pretty much the norm

drivers and amps have a come a long way in the last 10+ years

I remember when I was first starting out it was EXTREMELY hard to get in the 50's club. Now days with the drivers that are being used and the efficiency of the amplifiers its an everyday thing. It use to be very impressive to hear a 50's vehicle, but like you said, you hear them everywhere now.

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

Theres some nice setups in here.

I'm running a kicker 12" and it's pretty impressive for what it is. I use to run dual 12", but it was too much bass for me lol, everyone else loved it tho.

I build these enclosures by the way. If anyone is interested in them, shoot me a PM.

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

I started with a pair of Kicker 8" subs in a sealed well box. always got asked if i had something bigger in there cause these cars acoustics are so good. Although I couldn't hear them on the highway with the windows down or the t-tops off. 2 12's took care of that.

*Both set ups had sufficient power required by the speakers.

I would love to try a ported transmission box with 1 10" or 12". I have a custom ported box in my truck and it upsets people how loud my one 12" is vs their 2 12's. Box design can make or break any stereo.

A true T-line enclosure would take up the whole interior of the car and even a 1/4 wave would still be huge. Single 12 with a properly designed ported enclosure with sufficient power would be plenty and have the ability to play any music clean.

he could do a front loaded or tapped horn with a 8 or 10 and fit it in the back

something like the autotuba

which can be built in a few different form factors

even though ive stumbled onto the various horn designs, i still like a well built/designed bandpass box , those old school bp-12's i posted the pic of in my v6 car absolutely pound

the horn designs sure are fun to play with though and when done right can have very flat response
though with a horn the lower u tune it the larger it gets and give up some peak db

the ones i have that chart posted for above are tuned to play from 17hz to 100hz as a single cab the more u add the lower they go , if u changed that to 25-100hz u could pick up a bunch of max db and the box would shrink in size

Re: Anybody have LOUD bass in their car?

My friend and I used to design and build custom, tuned ported boxes. We've made some cheap equipment ROCK, and break stuff (Like his Grand Cherokee. lol). We always wanted to try some transmission boxes but never did.

I'm happy with my bass set up right now. 2 12's with sufficient power can play almost anything well in these cars. But Ill always wonder about that transmission box. Can you imagine the math to design one to fit the odd shape of the well?

Any of you familiar with Pete Kulicki of Team Toxic Bass? If not prepare to be amazed! He is the god of speaker boxes! His youtube channel is Hexibase. Check it out. I think his older videos are best. There are hundreds of videos. My favorites are the "whats in my trunk" videos. Steve Meade videos never disappoint either.

Yeah, but you don't tune a horn though. They are completely designed around the drivers T/S. Its pretty imperative to know what the t/s means so you can choose your driver properly. I know a lot of people who build "t-lines", but they are just tuned enclosures as they don't go completely off the t/s parameters to build them, they also design them off the cone area. Some do turn out sounding alright, but I'll still stand by a properly designed ported enclosure.

yes it mainly around the specs of the drivers the horn itself can be altered to change the tuning , i have 2 different plans for the same drivers

one does 124 db @ 1 meter @ 17 hz -100 +/- 3db this one is desigend to play 17-100hz
the other does
130+ db at 25hz -100 +/- 3db this one is designed to do 25-100
