are profile californis series amps really that bad??

my friend has a profile 350w rms/1 ch. class D amp driving two pioneer IMPP 12" subs in a seperated sealed cabinet. the subs are brideged into a 2 ohm load. for the most part it sounds great,I set it to 85HZ low pass.it's patched by RCA's from the pioneer 3300 HU. I would've bought a different amp myself, but this was $185 at circuit jerkit and seems to be doing the job.

that's what I'm saying here! I think that's the same amp my friend has,and the bottom line is "it does what he needs it to do" it's not just headache/rattle the car apart bass,it's actually natural quality sounding bass that does the job. even though it's not the "choice" amp for a true audiophile. that's why I told my friend "if your going to get a K-mart amp,at least get a prophile california series becuase I've seen one in action before and they do work!!" so....what's the real problem with these amps? I think it does fine for class D low-pass bass aplications, maybee not for the rest of the sound. I've seen some garbage amps and other aftermarket components like sony X-plode for example, that really do suck, but I can't find any real problems with this particular amp.

Better amps do what they need to do better, and for the same or less cost.

I'll happily put a $300 60 watt Kicker amp against a $400 1,000,000 watt legacy, urban, Profile, Boss, amp any day of the week. I guarantee the Kicker will out pound it all day long, and will sound better doing it... for less money.

Even if you're talking about less expensive stuff (If you plan to spend under $200 on an amp, don't waste your money - buy a better head unit with the money), a Pioneer, Kenwood, etc. amp will still outperform any of those other crap brands that are rated at 2x the power. I've been down that road. I've owned Boss, Profile, Urban, Pyramid, Jensen and a ton of other crap brands. I also own good stuff like Kicker and Rockford, and some of the intermediate like Pioneer. I've sold all of this stuff for years, so I see day in and day out just what the capabilities of all these brands are. Cheap amps just aren't a bargain. Plain and simple.

I'll agree with you there,my friends both bought the pioneer 3300 which has SFEQ and all that cool stuff, but I still think the Alpine HU's sound way better and don't cost much more. how can you go wrong with 4v pre-out? i've seen systems that ruckused with small amps,my alpine V12 75wx2 was pretty bad A ss and only cost me $200. bridged into a single 2 ohm it would've blown a prophile apart.....why didn't my friend get an alpine.. don't think I didn't try to tell them,oh well,it's not my car! some people just don't want to listen to reason. Prophile 500w max,for $180....not too overrated. I would give it credit for 150w RMS power. he'll understand when I'm not broke anymore and I get my car hooked up!

I think the only reason this amp is working so well,is because the pioneer 12" IMPP subs aren't underpowered, the box is just right and it's sealed (we made sure of that!) and i hooked it up very good, good ground,10 guage speaker wires with soldered ends and the two single coil subs are bridged to 2 ohms. that will bring out the best in any amp!

Thing is theres no such thing as a $400 legay amp.

Id take this amp (300$) MA

over a kicker one that cost $100 more, and this would out power it

heres the kicker

The kicker amp

Hey, I used to have a Profile Baja series in my lumina. I don't think I could've got a better amp for $150. It was still like 300w RMS bridged @2. It may not have been enough to impress any of you guys, but it powered my 2 MTX 12"s well enough to keep me happy and it still sounded better than half my freinds stuff.

All you guys can throw out all of the power ratings that you're spewing. They're all crap.

I would give it credit for 150w RMS power
Not even close. Never. My Kicker ZR600 is rated at 150 watts rms and I guarantee that after hearing it for 10 seconds, you'll realize just how totally bogus the Profile rating is. I had a "100 watt RMS" profile amp. My 30 watt pioneer will bury it, and I'm not even going to waste my time comparing it to my 60 watt Kicker or 150 watt Kicker.

Id take this amp (300$) MA
when people actually believe that they're going to get 4,000 watts for $300, nothing I say is going to ever change their mind. That MA Audio amp lists at $1200. You think that ubid auction is going to stay at $300??? Come on.

But really like u said thers no way its 4,000 or whatever watts...Ill bet though that its pretty powerfull tho.

it's not 150 watts?? then what is it like 10 watts? I'll give it 150watts worth of credit,it's supposed to deliver 375 watts RMS and 500 watts MAX according to the owners manual...I'll be the first to tell you that's . it's a $180 single channel amp so 150 watts real power isn't to much to ask. I still believe it will deliver 150 watts RMS,would a high end 150 watt amp sound better? ofcourse.

everyone that hears this sytem, says it sounds damn good! you wouldn't hear the bass & think.....oh,that must be a prophile amp in there.

Believe whatever you want. It's not my money that you're wasting. I'm speaking from EXPERIENCE. I'm not guessing about this stuff. I owned profile. That amp might (I use that term loosely) put out 150 watts into a purely resistive load on a test bench. But a speaker isn't a purely resistive load, it's a reactive load that has a complex impedance that changes with frequency and has a j-term. I'm not sure if you know what that is or not, but it's basically an impedance that's out of phase with the purely resistive element. A transducer is a reactive device, so it'll always have an inductive load. Anyway, the point of my long winded electronics lesson is that a reactive load is a much, much more difficult load for an amp to handle than a purely resistive one. This is where your 150 watt amp will fall flat on its face, whereas a good amp will still put out 150 watts, and a great amp will actually put out MORE power into a reactive load.

And that's assuming the amp can even put the 150 into a resistive load.

Like I said... believe whatever you want, and buy whatever you want, but I'm not making this stuff up.

I know what inductive reactance XC,XL and impedence...is,I'm not arguing your evidence,it sounds like you have some fairly sophisticated test equipment. I know that a modern solid state sound amplifier can be complex and there are many different ways to design a circuit, what I'm trying to get at is....this amp that my friend has, sounds good enough. I was surprized myself. I'm not trying to say that it sounds good like my old JL 500/1 amp, that was a real amp!! all I'm trying to establish here is that this amp and this particular setup sounds good in this car, there is no need to scrap it and get rockfords,MTX or anything else. simply enough,it works fine with the music in the car which is all powered off of the deck. so,what kind of real power can the prophile amp put out on a reactive load....not a resistive load, that doesn't even count.

please people stop bringing up 1,000,000,000,000,000 giga-watt legacy amps, that has nothing to do with this discusion.

this is a car with a simple sub setup to provide subtle bass to reasonably fill in the sound. we are not Db drag racing with 3000 watt amps. this is a no-name amp that most people wouldn't choose, but it is working fine. I would expect nothing more for the money spent on it. there is no competitive nature to this sound system. just a stereo in a car for the driver to listen to.

my sentiments exactly. my jensen amp does the job, neighbors complain of bass shakin the windows, and inside the car it couldnt be any clearer/cleaner sounding.

Nobody is saying that they don't make noise, it's just that the chep stuff isn't always the best deal going. When my 50x4 Jensen 4040HLX **** the bed, I replaced it with a 30x4 Pioneer amp. It was the same price as the Jensen, and rated at almost 1/2 the power. Not only did it have noticably more output, it was a lot cleaner and had a better crossover built in. For the same cash, I got more amp by going with a "less powerful" amp from a better name.
