Cowl Induction Air Cleaner Build

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts. I just picked up a cowl induction hood and I want to make it functional. I'm probably going to have to fab something up like the pic on the left I found, but got to thinking and was wondering if I can add a dual snorkel setup for low speeds like the current one I have pictured right? Would it effect airflow in an adverse way? I think the setup would look pretty neat when polished up, and it makes sense that I would get more cool air at low speed/low end. If it helps, my carb is an Eddy 1405. Any advice is appreciated!

Re: Cowl Induction Air Cleaner Build

You could use a baking pan (aluminum and has a rolled edge already). Get rid of the larger air cleaner lid for one that is just the same size of the air cleaner. That will give you something to tighten up and hold the cleaner and base. Find a way to attach the aluminum to the base of the cleaner and buy foam to make the seal against the hood. Summit sells 4 inch tall stuff.

Basically set up like an older t/a shaker set up. You will have the dual snorkel and cowl set up all going through the air cleaner.

Re: Cowl Induction Air Cleaner Build

I think I'm picking up what your suggesting, place the current housing over the baking pan, trace and cut out the back of the housing, and then use the 4inch foam to make a seal to the hood? I could almost ditch the lid entirely and have the foam seal everything to the top and get an air filter for the top, like a K&N X-stream, (Although I have heard that they cause a turbulence as the air enters the top and sides). Something to think about though! Thanks!

Might have an issue with getting the pan above the distributor too, but nothing a couple of spacers or bends couldn't fix.

Re: Cowl Induction Air Cleaner Build

Another thought is picking up the housing made by spectre, but it's expensive and I hear it's poor quality Chinese stuff. Could fab up the snorkels to that though and it would look nice. Anyone have experience with spectre?

homemade.
i've been meaning to re-make this for some time. it was just a crude prototype, but it works. engine runs about 10 degrees cooler in the summer.

Re: Cowl Induction Air Cleaner Build

That one from pitstop looks like it would make an awesome start, I'll have to see what size air cleaner she fits though. Joe, yours looks awesome man, I like the look it has going on. Real tough looking!

Re: Cowl Induction Air Cleaner Build

It should fit a 14" air filter no problem.
It's 28" long
23" wide
5" high
It is a kit that you have to modify to fit. Gotta cut your own hole for the carb.

A random pic of the setup off google image search.

Re: Cowl Induction Air Cleaner Build

hmmmmmmm, much potential! Cut for the carb, add two holes in the front for the snorkel's and I can almost call it a good day....asides from sealing her to the hood!

Re: Cowl Induction Air Cleaner Build

Nice! Tons of info there. I wish I could post a pic of the underside of my hood, but it's getting painted right now. The ring seal or cake pan method looks a bit easier, but the way the hood just comes up and over, and because I wan't to add the snorkels back to her, I think I'll try to whip something up like Joe's masterpiece or get lazy and use the Allstar pan as a base. I'll post a pic of the underside when I get her back, and hopefully be able to start this week on making something work!

Re: Cowl Induction Air Cleaner Build

Why not just purchase an induction kit for a 69 Z28 or a Chevelle (for HEI clearance)?

Re: Cowl Induction Air Cleaner Build

Thought about it, but the way my hood is, I would have to alter the cowl portion anyways, (Mine comes up and over, no hole cut-outs or anything). So I figure this might look a little cleaner once it's all finished. Although the aluminum baking pan idea could be a pretty easy fix for that!
