Hey all
i believe i may be trading my 91 Z28 to a guy for his 92 Z28 convertible heritage ed. and a 92 RS. The convert is a project started and not finished. he said it will need a new top on it. Ive been talkin to a few friends and they say its a bi*** to put on. I seen on ebay i could pick one up for 3-400 or so. I just thought I'd see what you all thought about it. im not to familiar with converts so im glad thirdgen has a convertible section.
It's not that bad. You can get a top from topsonline for around, actually under the ebay prices. They carry wear pads also which will probably be needed (they were on mine anyway) and also the side tension cables. other than that some weldwood gel adhesive and you are set (oh and a lot of small cheap plastic spring clamps. not rocket scince just make it look the way you want I just put them on somewhat tight and then they shrink from the sun too.
If you have never done one or have never done upholstery -personally I would not do it. If you want the car overall to b e nice it would be a shame to have a new but poorly fitting top, or worse one that got damaged during install. Make sure you check the condition of the top weatherstrips - at a minimum with a new top you will need a new rear bow to tonneau seal (they run $100) - all these weatherstrips for the converts are priced like they are made from solid gold - if you need a full set it will run you in the neighborhood of $600. ALso check the condition of the plastic trim covers at front top bow interior sided and windshield to ointerior side - if these are original they are liukely cracked or at least very brittle, replacements will run you $200 to $300 for both pieces.
mike where have u seen the trim that goes behind the latch handles not the one on the top of the windshield i need one but i have never seen a new or repop
as far as I know the only one currently reproduced is the on on the top of the windshield - if you need the one on the front top bow you need to try and find a good used one
yeah thats what i though mine has a small crack where one of the screw go when i get a new top i'm definatly going to get the cables and pads at the same time probly going to try out the glass also guys at 1a are pretty cool i called and asked them about a door panel color/fabric scheme that they did'nt show but said they could do any combo i wanted even sending me sambles of the coler so i can see what it looks like.
ok here is what I did for mine: remove the trim piece and clean the back side, scuff around cracks and screw holes.; I got very thin washers that were large enough hole to accomodate the screw size then I epoxied them on the back side to reinforce the screw holes. If there were small cracks i glued them first with super glue, then on back side over the crack and around the screw holes I used some body repair mesh as reinforcement and then spread epoxy over it. I used black wax ( actually shoe polish but I have also used black crayon) to help fill and hide the crack on the front side of the trim.
cool thats a great idea with the crayon or wax i think this would be perfect to fix mine no more thinking about what to do about it.... i also think it will look beter in the end than tring to plastic weld it and duplicate grain and so on. i always seem to find myself hijacking a thread(or wanting to) sry stream
