1990 Iroc-Z convertible
Found this listed on craigslist less than 2 weeks ago. Went and picked it up last sunday june 30th. Trailered it back. Will be selling when I get more work done to it. I like playing with 3rd gens, but I love driving my 2013 ZL1 Convertible
305 TPI
700R4
99k miles
Power everything
99+ Camaro seats
everything else is stock down to the air filters
Bought it knowing it had a fuel injector issue. Guy said he bought it not running, and found a bad injector which he unplugged to let the other 3 on that side run. brakes were locked up, no workie. came with new front calipers. when I changed them out I was going to put new pads on, but the pads were already like new!. also had polly end link bushings. Going to put new shoes on the rear drums here shortly as I still have very little breaks at all. booster may be bad.
Work done sofar
8 injectors replaced
new coolant temp sensor
new IAC valve
new front calipers
New TPI gasket kit.
Ordered a new top release cable
ordered a new canvas top with plastic window
new batters cable end bolts.
reinstalled the rear view mirror (had fallen off)
Work that needs done
Tires
Install top
Install latch cable
Speakers and cd player
Shocks
K&N Air filters
NGK TR55 plugs
Gut the cat
Muffler and tail pipes
PAINT!!!
Correct seats
Dash pad
Fix the tach
the drive home. 9-10 hour round trip. not too bad

Re: 1990 Iroc-Z convertible
So now that you got the car running and the brakes to work are you going to sell it? I am interested in the car but also like the third gen convertibles. Want to buy one that I can finish myself over time ,but also drive it. Please send me a P Message to Botch 1 with a phone number so we could talk. THANKS JIM

Re: 1990 Iroc-Z convertible
ordered up some new trunk support struts and new tires. both due next week. other than that nothing has changed. Spark plugs and a brake check and we should be on the road driving soon.

Re: 1990 Iroc-Z convertible
news update. I sold my 1997 SS in order to complete my ideas I have for this car.
I'll be pulling out the TPI motor/trans and rear end and selling them all. I'll be installing a LS1/4l60e from a 2000 Z28. with the help of a 2001 WS6 I bought.
so my new list of items that are going to be done.
1. Install LS1 engine, auto trans, and 4th gen rear end.
2. decide if im going to use gun metal ZR1's or speedline WS6 wheels.
3. use full LS1 brake system
4. Update suspension with lower/stiffer springs, bushings and sways.
5. Subframe connectors
6 install new top and paint the car.

Re: 1990 Iroc-Z convertible
Its a bad addiction.
Mine looked about the same condition as yours when I got it. Maybe a bit worse ...
Busted tach, ran like crap, needs paint and body work, needed back tires, brakes were good, dash pad was cracked ...
trunk struts shot ... same stuff. Too funny.
Installed new distrib, wires, plugs and new injectors (whole set) - car runs great now, and fast. Good enough for me to cruz around in.
Your interior looks pretty clean, that car is worth saving. LS1 - awesome upgrade. Paint up the engine bay while swapping.
Finally got mine inspected and on the road ... great to drive ...
Keep us posted with some updates, love seeing them come back to life

Re: 1990 Iroc-Z convertible
when I decided I was going to do the LS swap, I went looking for a complete car to use. ended up bringing home a 2001 Trans Am WS6 that had a rebuilt salvaged title and 63k miles. turns out someone had swapped the LS1 for a 5.3 iron block..... almost runs but needs some things sorted out. I'm parting this car out but I kept the seats and installed them in the iroc. lumbar support and all, black leather. I'll use the engine harness and driveline to swap into the iroc, and then when its done I'll swap for the LS1
so I went and bought a 2000 Z28 with 111k miles. complete running driving car. I'll use this engine and replace it with the 5.3 and then sell the car.

Re: 1990 Iroc-Z convertible
How could you sell such a gorgeus car. I wanted a triple black 90 iroc or 92 25th car that wasnt beat to pieces or priced stupidly and almost 20 years later I finally found one. I almost bought a blue 89 iroc and then a red marlboro car but finally found a triple black 92 25th z28. The verts have the best lines. I hope you use the ZR-1 wheels. I want bigger brakes on mine and will probably get chrome or polished ZRs. Hard to beat a black car with chrome. Hard to keep it clean also.

Re: 1990 Iroc-Z convertible
You bought 2 4th gens just to swap an LS engine into an IROC... You are officially a hoarder.
Cool stable though. a 3rd, 4th, 5th gen lined up and a TBSS! Great find!

sold the 97 SS, sold the TBSS. just the iroc vert and the ZL1 vert. 2014 sierra denali on order. I bought the TA for the LS1, when I found out it had a 5.3 I went and bought a better car for the swap.

Re: 1990 Iroc-Z convertible
I might have to look into a 90 iroc vert. The more I look at that red vert the more I want one or a blue one. I would love a yellow one but I don't think they ever made a yellow 1990 Iroc or am I wrong. I also saw a Orange 88 or 89 t-top Iroc last month and I don't remember bright orange being a production color either.
