only drivers side fan works
I changed out the thermostat today in my car. It was nothing like working on my 80 Z28. I changed out the thermostat in that car in 20 minutes. Anyway, I let the car run and get up to temp. It took about 10-15 minutes and when the needle hit 240 the drivers side fan kicked on and the temp held right there. I got in the car and turned on the a/c and the passenger side fan did nothing. Now, I did notice the compressor did not come on (arrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!) but that is for another day. Will the fan not kick on if the compressor does not kick on? I'd kind of like both of them to run regardless if the a/c is on. What is the trick for that? I'm going to change out the fan switch for a cooler one this weekend. Thanks in advance.

Ask VINNEY
Depends on the VIN.
On your car most likely that fan turns on (among other ways) when the AC head pressure >230.

Re: only drivers side fan works
Wouldn't the AC pressure kick on the drivers side fan only anyway? In my '88 TA the passenger side fan is only controlled by the temp switch in the head.

Depending on VIN the left or right fan is controlled by the AC.
Anyway his problem is even when the engine is 240°, and the AC is requested, he still has only one fan running.

Just hard wire the fans to both turn on at the same time. That is what I ended up doing on my old 88 305, it ran 10x better.

Lead Foot, how did you "hard wire" both fans? I've been wanting to do that, being that I need both fans on 99 percent of the times in this South Texas sun. For now, I've had to run the A/C in order for both fans to run, the one that is suppose to turn on by itself is not working.

Re: only drivers side fan works
Read my signature for details on how and when the fan comes on.
The passenger fan will rarely come on due to temperature alone as it starts higher up than the driver side one does.....It also turns on and off due to A/C high side pressure. If your A/C is low, it won't build up enough pressure to turn on the passenger fan.
This time of year, my passenger will cycle on and off when the A/C is turned on. In summertime, the passenger fan will stay on when the A/C is turned on. Both cases being in "cold start" modes with a cold engine. Has to do with the ambient temperature and what the condenser is dealing with.
