R12 Recharge

1988 5.7 - Turned on my A/C and the compressor keeps turning on/off. I imagine it is low on refrig since in the past it has worked fine. I have a couple of R12 cans and just wanted a refresher on the process to recharge. Thanks for all of your help

Re: R12 Recharge

Usually with r12 just hook up the can to the port on the accumulator tank with motor running and put it all in. Usually hold the can upside down. May be a bit overcharge but the system will handle it with the older refrig. Kind of nice to still have some of that old stuff.

Re: R12 Recharge

you might consider checking for leaks in the system before committing those valuable r12's. maybe one of those electronic sensors or something??

Re: R12 Recharge

something similar to this, was just the first one I ran across, these are cheap, probably not as good as professional units.
Amazon Amazon

check all connection points, all rubber hoses, open up evaporator housing and sniff around in there too, it can leak. check around your compressor, it has lots of seals

You can see all of the parts of the system here:

I bought a very similar unit off Amazon a few years ago. They work good!
