need to drain gas, easiest way??

i have an 89 TA that has sat for almost 5yrs now. I finally can afford to put a little money in it but need to start with cleaning out the tank. The last time it ran i'd just put a new fuel pump in it, so i really don't want pump old gas through it. I'd tried to siphon the gas out the before it was replaced and had no luck, anyone know any easier way than dropping the tank and axle?

Re: need to drain gas, easiest way??

the only way i know of to get the old gas and trash out without running the pump is to drop the tank and dump it out. it looks like thats gonna be the only way to do it.

I dont think it would hurt to run thru the pump and just pump it out . imo

Re: need to drain gas, easiest way??

Look up the Flo n Go. Nice little product. I got a syphon kit with my road side safety kit I bought. Basically just pump it out as if you were pumping it in. Really easy, and can be bought for about $30-$40.

My car has sat since 2006 with a fresh tank of 87, in which is the ONLY tank of 87 ever to go through this cars motor (always had 91 since original owner), I have about 14 gallons left.

I am going to syphon the gas and add a full tank of 91, the guy told me when I bought it that since he put the 87 in it didnt run as good. So Im not allowing it to go through my system. After doing so i will be buying these products to help clean the fuel system

I got a pump, I think from auto zone. On the handle it said diesel pump but it works for are gas too. Used it when I though I had water in my fuel. I think it was pretty cheap and basic (two hoses and a hand crank). put one hose in the tank, the other in (what ever you want the old gas to be in) and Crank it a few time to get it going and then it will pore out on it's own. Just be careful about the gas you pull out, dispose of it correctly.

On my 90 suburban I disconnected the fuel line and enabled the fuel pump relay and let the pump drain the tank. When your done you'll want to replace the fuel filter. It took me a while though. I had 35 gallons of gas in the tank .

I think I filled up every lawn mower within 10 miles.

Hook up some hose to the outflow metal hose by the engine, enable the fuel pump, belive you can do this using the ADAL, once fuel is not coming out " just trickeling" kill the pump before it dies from overheating from not gas.

That's what we do when we go to the racetrack. There is a single connector on the passenger side (driver's side on a firebird). Put 12 volts to it from the battery and the fuel pump will run. Disconnect the fuel feed line before it goes into the fuel rails, and run that line into another hose.

Re: need to drain gas, easiest way??

The problem with using the internal fuel pump to pump out the tank is the filter/sock on the input of the fuel pump will prevent all the crap from being pumped out of the tank, that is why it is there. Best solution drop the tank, drain the tank and than replace the filter/sock on the internal fuel pump. if your tank is full of crap, than your internal pump filter is going to be all plugged up.

Re: need to drain gas, easiest way??

its a easy way to drain the fuel to drop the tank.
Nothing should reach your fuel pump, thats what the strainer is for, and if you have a decent fuel pump, it also will have a screen before the pump

Exactly my point. if you have crud in the fuel tank the internal fule pump will not remove it, the strainer as you call it will prevent it from getting drained out.

Re: need to drain gas, easiest way??

the last thing i did to the car was replace the fuel pump, it was drained no more than 10miles ago, the problem is the old gas, maybe 3 gallons. would it be safe to pump it through? it's probably 4yrs old.

Re: need to drain gas, easiest way??

The 4 year old gas is probally better than any new
gas ( which is all crap ).
If all thats in there is 3 gallons just put new in with it.
It will mix.

Yup, if you can't syphon anymore out then just start adding some new fresh fuel and maybe a fuel system cleaner?

The mix will be about 1/5 crap to 4/5's new fresh gas. You'll be fine I say.
