Putting an 89 chip on an 87 car

First time to post to this board...I wish I was burning my own chips. I'm letting someone else burn me a chip and was wondering what was required/recomended for the plain ARAP 89 to be put into an 87. I want to make sure this chip I'm getting will work the first time and forever. Thanks.

Disable VATS, Change the Fan operation flag to normal, unplug your cold start injector as cold start fuel is included in the ARAP bin... Thats basically it.... But you might want to have a closer look at the spark tables, as they are quite aggresive in the stock ARAP code....

Aggressive? Is this something I should be concerned about? (As in will it not function as well as my 87 chip?)

It should work okay, but don't get low quality gas, definitively not 87 octane.... Get 92 premium....

The extra spark will be enjoyed for sure.. But everybody forgets that the ARAP was for the 89vette auto car. Meaning that the engine had aluminum heads. Most people forget that...

I am using essentially the ARAP Bin in my 87 5.0 Car. It runs so darned AWESOME I can't believe it. It inproved my milage from 20 to 23 and I can SMOKE the tires. I got the 305 modified Bin from ZaphodB, changed the settings for when the Fans would kick on, burned it, plugged it in, and I like it.

Of course I have a few mods, and it might not work with the "peanut" cam that came with the Automatic 5.0 TPI, although it should work with your 350. I have read posts that some people have problems with the ARAP bin though.

below are all the mods I have.

OK so far I have..

1)Disable Vats
2)Change Fan temps
3)take out cold-start injector (is it okay to leave it in until I get a plug off kit?)
4)Run 92 octane gas (I don't now)

Is there anything else I should change on the chip/car before plugging it in?

Also, for simplicity's sake, without putting in a Zif socket or resoldering anything, would I have to get a complete memcal (with chip) for a clean install?

Just a suggestion. You can just pull out the 3 Amp Crank fuse from the fuse block to disable the 9th injector circuit if you don't want to get into the plumbing mods. It disables the cold start circuit quite nicely.

Make sure that you have the normally open (N.O.)switch option selected or the fan will run all of the time when you turn the ignition key on. There is really no way that you will be happy for all time with just this bin. You will probably be wanting to get into burning your own asap. Keep in touch with the guys on this board and read the great article that Traxion put together (Prom burning Introduction). I found that the main spark advance table numbers were way too high for my application. With cast iron heads and an ambient temperature over 108* I was getting pretty bad detonation problems at wide open throttle (even with 92 octane). As 'Grumpy' has said many times, you have to set it up for what your engine wants not what you think it likes. One last thing. I purchased a stock 89 IROC memcal and after reading its binary pattern into my EPROM burner I erased it and reprogrammed it. You will need to make or get an adapter to program the memcal directly though. It is nice to have a spare and there is no risk of butchering the memcal you have trying to put in a Zero Insertion Force or any other type of socket. Make sure that you specify your transmission type, rear end ratio, engine size etc. for the Pontiac dealer so they give you the right one. Good luck to you and happy Third-Genning. I love GTAs Too!

If your having someone else burn you a chip your still just 1/2 wasting your time. Might be a little better then stock, but it won't be optimized for your particular car or driving style.

This board is about burning your own chips not how to have someone do it for you.

ARAP is the best to START with, it's not an all enclusive best answer
