Damn Smart Aleck GM Engineers

Ok , so with the new EBL system in the computer, I've been trying to get ol' whale started consistently, no stalls or near stalls, no three and four times at the key till it finally but barely keeps running. . So I figured I'd better start from scratch again and loaded the start routine from the stock Calibration back into the ECM.

Forgot it was there this morning.

Oh crap! This is gonna hurt!

Cranked it over, caught right away, stayed running, no stalls, no shuddering on it's way to stall (unlike Uncle Phil when he had that heart attack), Nice smooooooth idle.

Damn Smart aleck GM engineers

What makes those clowns think that with millions of dollars, brilliant minds, state of the art diagnostic equipment and 24/7/365 dynos and test tracks, that they can do something better than me with a laptop, a few day old donuts and a glove box full of tow truck receipts!

DAMN SMART ALECK GM ENGINEERS!

My bet is it isn't the GM engineers at all, but Rbob's modified code.

Re: Damn Smart Aleck GM Engineers

I'd bet it's my own stupidity long before I'd fix blame on that man.

To fix it, it was one of Rbob's "stock" calibrations used, that comes with the EBL CD.

I'm the one who modified it, not Rbob.

As Grumpy would say "give it what it needs". More air more fuel or both.

And make the engine "happy". I almost miss those harsh/smart/condesending comments. He would bait you with a challenging comment then bash you for your answer lol. Damn he knew this stuff though...

You'd be surprised how affordable these cars are. A friend has a 90 w 60K miles for 13K. The motor is an anvil, good for 200K miles. Just an amazing motor. Something unappreciated by other Corvette cognoscenti. Its a one and only. First aluminum motor in a Vette, only DOHC ever installed in a Vette, designed by LOTUS and built by MercCruiser.
Holds the World's Record for a Production vehicle for average speed over
5000km and miles. Done in 24hours @175mph average. Did I mention it was truly an amazing motor?

No disrespect to Bruce, but it was Bob all along who brought the info.

Well I didn't know that but Bruce sure was a character. His username seemed to fit him well.

And Bob (Rbob?) is certianly an invaluable resource. I just wish I could get him to hold a class on this or something. I'd bring my car, laptop, case of beer, whatever and be there!

I am not sure about that. There certainly was a very good collaboration there but having had the opportunity to speak and meet w Bruce, he was a "driver" of DIYTuning and where it is today. He sometimes came across as unhelpful but his intent was to make people acquire the knowledge necessary. The more knowledgeable people, the faster things advance. I always felt he was a pioneer in this area along w RBob, whom I have tremendous respect for. Sometimes I just shake my head at the stuff he knows.

antman,

You know Bruce started a annual or semi-annual meeting in Greenwood OH where we would get together to discuss tuning and demo some things we were working on. We actually had 1 or 2 of these after Bruce's passing as a memorial. Maybe we should do another one?

I was not aware but would certainly love to attend one. I may not have a lot to bring to the table but I promise to pay attention and not ask any stupid questions. Well... ok, maybe a couple.

Seriously, I am interested. I feel like there are a few key pieces of info that would shed a whole lot of light on the subject for me.

Grumpy would challenge me to think... I don't want the answer just given but show me how to get there. Maybe a clue here and there...

Hey hey, I am not putting Bruce down in any way whatsoever, he was a very nice man. He was Doc over on the Buick boards, I didn't even know that myself until much later because the Grumpy that I always knew (Dan) raced with Steve Kaminski. Bruce put his stamp on this website, and many of the best tuners on this board argued with him, challenged him, but then inevitably learned from him. The best tuners out there never challenge Bob Rauscher though (RBob), they just ask him for tech because they know he is the source. That is just the way it is. Bob writes his own firmware, can tune anything, and he is a guru with GM code. Bob is incredibly gifted, and this board is very lucky to have him. Believe me. Bruce knew how to tune, and he learned that from being a Turbo Buick guy...

Was always helpful, just wouldn't GIVE the answer.
Made you answer your own question to make you understand why you were doing something (and the downsides of doing it)
Teach you to fish.

That was fun to meet some of the guys and was helpful too, wouldn't mind doing it again sometime.

I'd love to participate. It wouldn't be that bad of a drive from Rochester NY to anywhere in Ohio.

Highway mode, here we come!

Any local, community colleges with with an Auto Tech dept to host it? Do I hear Guest Speaker?
