Battery harness looking fried??

I changed the pickup and ignition module in my car and it started and ran fine given the timing was off. Today after it started and I moved it I went to change the timing. I didn't disconnect the neg. battery terminal and I noticed that I misplaced a couple of plug wires. So I swapped them and tried to start my car and it did. I adjusted the dissy again then the engine refused to crank at all
and all my power died ( dome light, dash, radio). The wires leading to my neg. bat terminal look fried. I don't know what caused this but If I don't get any suggestions soon I might have to sell the black beast.
And I REALLY DON'T WANT TO DO THAT,

thanx in advance,
R.

well I got the battery cables from Autozone,
it looks like the ground extends to the starter,
so I guess this means that I need to raise the car on jackstands
to replace it right? My red cable was hooked to the positive side is this correct?

Ummm, no? The ground (black -) heavy wire connects to the block near the alternator, and the small pigtail connects to the body next to the battery. The positive (can be either red or black +) heavy wire connects to the starter, with the pigtail running to a junction block which connects to the charging connection on the alt, another wire to the fan(s), and yet another wire to the ??? (ECM I believe).

Check all the wires some of them have fusible links somewhere along there path going to the starter and to the alternator they burn up like a fuse also check the ecm/ fuel pump fuse if you have one most of the time it should be right next to the battery in a small fuse holder if that happened your dash lights should be all strange.
