stock radio wiring

so yeah my radio is being a freak

apparently the previous owners of my car took out the stock radio and put in a new one, then when they sold it, replaced it with a delco radio - only what appears to be from a 94 - 95. they cut all the wires in the back and rehooked them up to the stock, so there's little blue plastic cover things on them all...

but there's a purple wire that's cut in two, and there's an orange wire with a black stripe on it that comes into the car, but there's no room to put it so it just hangs. all the other wires seem to be plugged in and intact...

so whenever i get into my car, the clock always says 12:00, and the radio is always on 1400am. i change it to whatever, then when i get to where im going and turn off the car, after about 30 seconds the radio loses it's memory and goes back to 12:00 and 1400am whenever i turn it back on. is the orange/black wire the memory wire, or is the purple one? i've already spliced the purple and attached it back to rest of it coming out of the radio but that did nothing. someone help...

yes the orange wire is the constant +12 volts and that should be connected to the radio's memory wire or battery wire

If you haven't worked it out by now, go to www.installdr.com and you'll find wiring info--all the colors and where they go.

from the install dr.

To save you a few steps, here's the wiring chart for 1982-1988 cars from the install dr. I had to change size and resolution quite a bit to add this image, so I hope it's still legible.

the radio is staying on because u arent wiring it correctly, the YELLOW wire, needs to connect to the ignition power wire on the radio, and the ORANGE wire needs to connect to the battery or memory wire of the radio.

okay i found out what the problem was...

a previous owner of my car installed an aftermarket alarm system... xcalibur... and that big red wire was connected to where the orange wire is supposed to go (which is the battery wire)

so i just unplugged the red wire from underneath the dash and now the memory works. freaking retarded previous owner~

but thanks guys for your help ! now i have a clock in my car and i no longer need to pull out my cell phone to know the time... and manually search for stations

you all rock
