HID's
I have the conversoin kit to make my headlights the H4 Bulbs. I put some HID's in there and the wiring harness only lets you use the low beams as the only power source to go to the ballasts, so then I when i go to the high beams they just go off. I was wondering if there is a way to wire it so when I turn the brights on they stay on. I tried connecting the high beam hot wire to the low beam wire but when I turned them on the switch just sstarted smoking!! Any ideas ??

Im guessing you have one light for low & hi beams. If so your HID's will have to be duel filament type in order to have low & hi beams, you may just regular HID for a setup with more than 2 headlights. Also you won't nead hi beams if you have HID's. My camaro has 10,000K bulbs & their bright as #@%?.

If you hooked your hi beams to your lo beams and you still had halogen hi beams then you probably toasted the halogens. HID's run at about 75 volts and 400 hz. If you had HID bulbs in the hi beam locations then you probably overloaded the ballasts and let a little smoke out. You can only run one bulb per ballast. If you want hi beams you need 4 HID bulbs and 4 ballasts. If you knew in advance you can order a kit called Bi-HID that simulates hi beams by changing the focus of the bulb up when the hi-beams come on. It works real good but your lo-beams and hi-beams come out of the same headlight, your other 2 headlights are just along for the ride.

Your right Karl, I need to check the signature more often. If you still want to rig it so the lights don't go out when you hit the hi beams then check this site out http://faqlight.carpassion.info/headlamp-harness.html It is a little extra work but the only safe way to do it.

Well nobody can tell you it's a bad idea, but I don't think it's necessary on 3rd gens. Newer cars have special electronics that monitor current thru the headlights to check for problems and blown bulbs. The only time our headlight swithches carry more current with HIDs is during the first few seconds when we turn them on, after that they are carrying almost half as much amps. So if we are careful and don't un-necessarily turn them on and off and turn them on after you start the engine (the starter interrupts headlights) we should have no worries. Also remember that restarting HIDs after they have already warmed draws more amps than when they are cold.
