left turn signal not working when i brake

as the title says

-with brakes applied my left turn signal does not work

-when the brakes are not applied, my left turn signal blinks both left and right back turn signals (just like hazard lights)

-the front left turn signals function normally, with brakes not applied. they do not light at all when brakes are applied.

-the right turn signals function normally

-i have replaced both flashers and the fuses are good and i don't seem to have any bulbs out

any suggestions? please help, i nearly crashed into a speeding vw cause that bastard couldn't recognize my left turn signal. thanks.

The only logical conclusion I can draw from the wiring design and your symptoms is that your multifunction switch is faulty.

But just to confirm: when you said "with brakes applied my left turn signal does not work", did you mean they the bulb does not light up or the brake lit red bulb doesn't flash and stays on?

No matter, it still points to the multifunction switch.

The only way to test it is to drop the plastic cover above the pedals, access the wiring on the steering column and disconnect the multifunction switch connector. Then you can use a multimeter to ohm out different wires while flipping the stalk switch right and left. If you'd like to do that, let me know, I can give you detailed instructions.

Hope this helps.

The left signal will not flash or blink and when brakes are applied.

Is the multifunction switch, the turn signal switch? Is it easy to replace?

Yup, it's the turn signal switch. It is located in the steering column, behind the steering wheel (which needs to be removed first). The wires run down the steering column and I don't think they're hard to fish out.

It's up to you whether you want to just replace it (for $28, I believe) or if you'd rather first troubleshoot it.

Re: left turn signal not working when i brake

I think I'll just replace the whole thing, if I gotta take the steering wheel off and stuff...

I have instructions on how to get to the turn signal switch from my Haynes manual, but it says you need special tools. Are those really necessary?

Re: left turn signal not working when i brake

I don't remember the exact instructions on how to get to the switch but when I did it a few years ago, I just rented a steering wheel puller from AutoZone (free) and that was it.
