It seems like the speedo/odo *wants* to work but all I get is this squealing sound now after replacing the resistor and capacitor.
No, mine never made that noise. Maybe you can try the oil and see though.

anyone esle having issues when its wet out
I have this exact issue. Did you have any luck with this five years ago?

EDIT: I also have a 92 RS (TBI) 305, but I haven't had my cluster serviced. I'll probably check the resistor, clean the contacts, and report back.

Re: 1990,1991,1992 Camaro Speedometer FIX!

Replaced the 150uF 24V capacitor in my gauge cluster, also cleaned and polished the contacts on that daughter board as well as the main cluster contacts.
My gauge now works again.
p.s. I doubt the resistors need to be replaced, these caps are just most likely dried out and popped.

I know it has been several yeas since you posted this...just curious if you ever got the speedometer and odometer fixed or working? I have a 92 Camaro doing the same thing...stumped at this point on what to do.

Re: 1990,1991,1992 Camaro Speedometer FIX!

I have a 91 Z28 that the odometer and trip meter were not working at all. The speedometer would start working after driving it down the road a few miles. Thinking this had to be a leaky capacitor and the fact the resistor measured the correct resistance I first replaced the capacitor. It worked for exactly 5 tenths of a mile and stopped again.

I brought it back home and replaced the resistor and retried it. I have put on close to 70 miles and the odometer and speedometer all seem to work as they should. I was a little surprised as the resistor measured what it should but maybe as it heated up it failed? The only other explanation is that there was a poor factory solder joint on this connection. I just did not have the patience to test out this theory.

Thanks for everyone that has contributed to this thread.

Re: 1990,1991,1992 Camaro Speedometer FIX!

Anyone still do this as a service? I would prefer to have a known good unit to put in and send in my core.

Re: 1990,1991,1992 Camaro Speedometer FIX!

So my 92 Z-28 Odometer failed. I pulled the circuit board. Inspection revealed several components have failed. I can read the resistors[ 2 failed] but I can't identify the capacitors[ 1 exploded - Not the 150 micro F cap] The numbers that I read are as follows: K5R - 103M; K1R - 102K; K5R - 104K. The resistor are 3.9 ohms; 100k ohms ; 75k ohms. Anybody have access to parts manuals who can cross reference these numbers?

Re: 1990,1991,1992 Camaro Speedometer FIX!

Solved!
The B4C and Z28 have a 145MPH Speedometer, where regular Camaro's have a 110MPH Speedo.
THE SPEEDOMETER BOARDS ARE DIFEERENT!
I bought one from West Coast Autoparts and it worked but red 90 MPH when I was going 60 (approx).
They told me the boards were the same. WRONG!
They gave me an RMA and refund, and I placed a repair order for my Board and sent it to them.
I received it back in about 10 days and it works fine. Cost about $140.
My board was intermittent. They replace the capacitors and resistors, etc. and tested it.
The 145 MPH boards are almost impossible to find.
I would recommend them anytime.

I think the convertible z28's came with 110 mph. I could be wrong.

Re: 1990,1991,1992 Camaro Speedometer FIX!

Got my board repair back from West Coast Autoparts, only took them 1 day to repair it and it was back out. Great support when I called in because UPS lost my package. Luckily UPS came back the next day and used GPS to track it to a house two streets over. Board now works perfectly, and they included a sheet on all the repairs they performed. Worth every penny.

this guy 😂 I’ve watched quite a few of your 3rd gen vids. I’m in the process of repairing this board. Seems like my chip and some other resistors are not working correctly either though.

Re: 1990,1991,1992 Camaro Speedometer FIX!

On my 92 rs heritage most of the time the speedo is fine, but every now and then it will jump up to over 100, then back to normal, what should I check for this.

It always works though, just jumps around like crazy every now and then, even when idling in park

My first guess is to look for dirty or intermittent ground connections in the gauge cluster circuit board.

Re: 1990,1991,1992 Camaro Speedometer FIX!

1992 Firebird V8 Speedometer/odometer repair. I have no speedometer and no odometer. Replaced speed sensor buffer, VSS, etc, etc. I have searched and searched and can't seem to find my style speedometer and board anywhere. Totally different than the 91-92 Camaro boards. Here are a few pictures. I am currently replacing the odometer gear as it broken and figured I would see about repairing the board, but not sure what resistors and capacitors are needed.
