400 big block?
I have a friend with a 3rd gen fire bird. He told me that a 400 big block engine would be able to drop right in with no mods done to anything. could one of you guys tell me if that is true or not.
thanks.

I guess that depends on what you'd consider "problems".
A big block will bolt right in, it just hooks directly up to the motor mounts and transmission; but it doesn't fit the chassis real well. Exhaust among other things can be an issue. But for alot of people it's not a problem.
Bog blocks come from the factory in sizes of 366, 396, 402, 427, and 454. The 366 and some 427s are "tall blocks", which don't really fit these cars. No big block is commonly referred to as a "400" although for a couple of years the cars that came with 402 had "400" badges. Most people, when they (we) talk about a 400, are referring to a small block.
A bunch of people on this board have made the swap. Do a search, that's amongthe most popular motor swaps, and has been discussed in every possible detail.

Car: 1991 Formula
Engine: 350 firebreathing inches of Small Block Chevrolet
Transmission: A 700R4 that has trouble handling the formentioned 350.
Exactly what he said. The 402 Big Block was badged as a 400. But the identification is easy (Big Block vs. Small Block). The 402 replaced the 396 (the 402 is just a 396 bored .030 over).
Your buddy might have a 400 Pontiac in his Firebird though, he probably just refered to it as a Big Block because the block is bigger than a small block chev. but it isn't a Big Block either it's a Pontiac block, way different then a Chev. Small or Big Block.
If your going to swap in a 400 (or 402) for simplicity I would suggest a 400 Small Block Chevrolet (easiest swap of the 3) (the 3 being Pontiac 400 vs BBC 402 vs SBC 400)
