To have someone install, you are probably looking at 5-6 grand, maybe more. You could save about 3 grand if you do it yourself. I have close to 4 grand in mine, but 3k of it was for the motor/tranny combo.
As for the time being down, since I've done the swap twice I could probably pull it off in a couple of weekends if everything was there and ready and nothing else had to be done.
As for a shop doing it, you may be looking at a month, maybe a little less.

I was thinking of doing an ls1 swap into my 88 and had the same questions about having the swap done by a shop. If you go to the regional board you can read some about the place that is doing this work in Houston. I called the shop and inquired about the cost if I located the engine I wanted and took car and engine to the shop. The estimat/guess was $2500. I made arrangements today for an LT1 and have decided to do the swap myself. I decided that it would be a better project if I did the work. The only concern I have is sorting out the wires but there are a couple of people in my area that may be able to head me in the right direction...cpl diagrams a meter cpl cans of beer and it should work out.

Due to time constraints I also did some price checking and I guy at the performance shop quoted me $2000, but I said the hell with it and I will be finishing it up sometime this May.

Holy shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit that better come with the Mechanics 19 year old daughter on the side!!! or else I would rather have my uneducated self install it. I got a mechanic who will do it for 1 grand!!!!!!!! All I have to to do is have everything and I mean everything ready for him to install.

I was just about to make this same thread.
I'm thinking about getting an LS1 Fbody or GTO and also considering swapping in an LT1/LS1.
So one guys says $5000 and other said $1000.... hmmmm.
I would probably pay up to $2500 if they did a good job, but it seems like it would be hard to do unless you've done it with a 3rd gen before.. espeically with the Ls1. It's not like dropping it in an older car with no wiring/computer issues to work out.

Just remember you generally get what you pay for. You'll probably get a quality install with people who know what they are doing if you pay the 5 grand. You'll probably get a half *** thrown together mess for a grand. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but generally speaking this is the case.
