Cam Questions
I bought an '86 iroc with a tired 305 tpi. I'm going to build a 350 for it but I'm wondering if i can get a little more cam with out screwing with the computer.I had plan just a stock l98 build but thought a little more grunt would fun.
I realize I need the knock sensor the 350 prom and a few other things I found out about on this site. but how far can I go with the cam with out any hassels. It will probably get headers and a cat back eventually.
You guys are the experts, you bail me out all the time. I know some one has done this before. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Oh yeah, plenty out there.
First need to know if your 350 is roller lifter or flat tappet.

Re: Cam Questions
LO5's were a toss up. You have to visually check if its machined for a roller cam or not. Simply a year wont suffice

Re: Cam Questions
well I have a 350 block that came from a 95 chev pick up with vortec heads I probably won' use those heads unless I get a killer deal on a vortec intake base . I can go roller or flat tappet. I need to know what cam to choose with out making the computer go crazy. I just want to make the car a little more snappy than stock because I have a stock Iroc also. I do have a stock chip from an 88 Iroc tpi. Will it plug into my computer? Will that make the cam choices better?

Re: Cam Questions
A 95 LO5 wont have vortec heads. Centerbolt valvecovers, yes but not factory vortecs. Vortec started in 96 with the CPI
Itd be counter productive to put a tappet cam into a roller block. Find out what you have first
A TPI chip will not work with the TBI PCM. A Fbody TBI chip will also not work with the truck TBI PCM. They are very different. Fbodys TBI ECMs are a derivative of the TPI ECM where trucks started over with a PCM to control the new 4L60E transmission. Even if it did swap over, off the shelf chips are junk. There is no replacement for a proper tune

Re: Cam Questions
did I say 95 I meant 96. I want to use the computer in the stock tpi 305 86 iroc. I would like to replace the 305 with a 350. I'm going to use the 96 350 truck block, crank, and rods. I may use vortec heads if I can find an intake base cheap. if not I will go wit circa 86 stock heads.
We're kinda getting off point here. I need to know how much cam the stock '86 computer will take and will an 88 stock chip wor in that computer.

Re: Cam Questions
It will need a tune and injectors. Youll be beyond maxed on both with the 350 shortblock, 305 heads and TPI on there
L98 Prom/MEMCAL and injectors may get you close, but itll never be perfect

If I already had Vortec heads, I would do what it took to get a Vortec base before settling for L98 heads.

Re: Cam Questions
I agree with five7kid. But if you don't care about power, then sell the Vortec heads, and then you'll have enough $ to finish the project properly.

Re: Cam Questions
After all this I think I'm just going to put a stock l98 in place of the 305. I'll get the chip, the injectors the knock sensor, and anything else i need to make it happen
