Motor Mount Issue.

I recently had my Motor Mounts replaced. I couldn't do it myself because i live in a Condo and that type of Maintenance is strictly forbidden there. While the car was there, i had him replace the oil Pan as well. THAT went just fine. The Motor mounts, I'm not so sure. I purchased some SOLID Moroso Motor Mounts from Summit to replace the Stock ones. Apparently, they're shorter than the stockers. I told the Guy to take his time, there was no rush since it's not my daily driver. He took about a week to complete the repairs. I also had him Replace my Distributer with one i picked up from Summit. Someone had changed the Carb to aftermarket, but not the Distributer. I now have a Vacuum Advance one properly installed. Anyhow, back to the Mounts. He used the old long bolts. They were Obviously VERY VERY much longer than the New mounts. He tried to use Shims. When i looked under the hood, One side of the shims are apparently gone. Probably from the trip home (7-8 Miles). Can i Replace these bolts myself without Removing the engine? Do i need a pry bar and a buddy? Here are some Pics and links to the Parts that are installed:

Also, my Temperature Gauge no longer works. What could have happened?

Re: Motor Mount Issue.

thats awsome! the guy didnt have any washers laying around?

if you can move the bolts all the way through the mounts and put washers on the threaded side, that will work. may have to hit the bolts with a hammer to get them to move. the first pic looks lke you can just take the nut off, pile on some washers and be done. thats pretty much what you wan to do on the other side, but its pretty close to the fuel pump, dont know it you have room

personally, i would take it back and have the guy do it right, and that requires supporting the engine with a hoise while you change the bolts.

temp gauge, on the driveside of the block, between teh front 2 cylinders is the temp sender, i has 1 wire clipped to it. it was probably knocked loose when he was working. i should be able to see the wire in the 1st pic, but i dont. its probably laying in there somewhere. Unless it was relocated, or in a different place on the 82's.

Re: Motor Mount Issue.

The wire is intact. I'm really thinking about getting the right size bolts. I suppose some nice Grade 8 Bolts would work for this? This can't be done with a Crowbar and a buddy?

Re: Motor Mount Issue.

grade 8 is fine, IIRC, i use 7/16 when i did mine, but that was with poly inserts, IDK if the solid mount holes are hte same size. I suspect they are though. I would use lock nuts, or at least lock washers.

you may be able to do it with a prybar, but its a little tight in there. give it a shot see what happens.

the temp wire is not broken, or melted to the exhaust or anything?

Re: Motor Mount Issue.

Nope, the wire looks fine. It's a brand new gauge too. I can't explain it. I may try the Prybar Method. I think i might give the Mechanic a call tomarrow and see if he wants to fix this for me. If he does, then i'll give him that opportunity.

Re: Motor Mount Issue.

does the gauge read all the way cold, or hot?

if you take the wire off, with the key in the run position, and ground the wire to the engine block, what does the needle do?

It reads Cold all the time. I'll have to wait for daylight to answer the second question, but i'll try that tomorrow and report the results.

Re: Motor Mount Issue.

that is pretty silly looking (specially the shims instead of washers). Another option besides the prybar (which I'm sure will be difficult because of the weight of a full engine) is to use a jack on the oil pan (with a piece of wood between the jack and the pan) to raise the engine SLIGHTLY and do one side at a time...maybe a combination of the prybar and jack?...

Re: Motor Mount Issue.

Well, i'm leary of the Oil Pan/Jack solution. Especially since i have JUST replaced the Oil Pan. It's BRAND NEW.

Re: Motor Mount Issue.

you might end up doing more damage trying the pry bar method. If you use a thick piece of wood that covers the whole bottom of the pan, you'll be fine...unless your new oil pan is made of paper . thats what I did when I supported my engine when I was trying to align it to the tranny during the swap. If you just lift the jack slightly, you can do 1 at a time that way the full weight of the engine isn't on the oil pan (oil pan + 1 mount)...

Re: Motor Mount Issue.

Called the Shop that performed the Repairs and they are willing to correct the problem at no cost. In Fact, the Head Mechanic said he didn't know that situation existed. I hope i didn't get one of the Mechanics Fired. Anyhow, i drove the car over there (Gingerly) and it should be fixed THE RIGHT WAY soon.

Re: Motor Mount Issue.

I Called the shop that installed my Motor mounts and explained the situation. The Head Mechanic said to bring it in and they would fix it Free of charge. I brought him some Grade 8 Bolts that I was sure were the right size along with nuts and Lock washers. after a couple of days (I told him to take his time because it's not my Daily Driver) he called me and told me it was done. They did an Excellent job! Here are the pics of the New Mounts.

Hard to see, but did the shop leave out the bottom mount bolts on the K-member? You should have 3 per side

Re: Motor Mount Issue.

I don't know if the guy got fired or not. I would imagine that it would take more to get someone fired than just doing a poor job on some motor mounts, but it WOULD be dangerous. All three bolts are there. The Bottoms of those mounts have Four holes, but i think they're made to be somewhat universal. The second job was done quite well.

I don't know, man, that kind of workmanship is usually consistent, not a one time thing. Anyway the second time around it looks like they did a really nice job, I'm glad it turned out alright.
