swapping 305 2 460hp 350 help i'm dumb :)

ok some of you might have seen my paint thread i did for this car and I've gone back and forth on if i wanted to keep it.... I'm keeping it i think lol anyway finally to the point of pulling the motor and getting the one I'm building in it. I'll admit I'm not a gear head but i like trying to do things like this. so please don't be to rough on me I'll try not to ask the really really dumb q's just the dumb and not so dumb ones. to start iv never pulled a motor before. i am mechanically inclined and have every tool under the sun just never did this. i have installed one with help(he worked and i watched) lol

i have it all disconnected(I THINK) motor mounts, flywheel(3bolts) trans to motor(5 bolts) and all the hoses and wires. where i'm nervous now is getting the motor and trans to seperate so i can lift. i lift it up and it comes apart about 3/8's and the trans hits the car at the top. is this just a matter of it popping apart and i'm being to careful. I'm going very slow with this and just trying to do it right and not break anything. even bought a cherry picker that WONT GO IN FAR ENOUGH grrr that really sucked lol so now I'm using a come along. anyway please chime in.

thank you

Re: swapping 305 2 460hp 350 help i'm dumb :)

If what you meant was that the trans and engine split apart about 3/8" then likely whats happening is the bellhousing on the transmission is getting hung up ontop of the flexplate(flywheel).. pry them apart a little more and they should come apart. If you can slide the trans back that would help.

ok i'll unhook the trans *sigh* i was hoping to not have to just cuz it looks like such a pain with that torque arm and stuff. oh well i dought if it would have lasted long with the motor i'm putting in anyway. maybe i'll just pull it and go have it built to hold up. thanks for the tips guys.

Yeah unhook the trans and crossmember. Watch out for trans lines and wires. The more stuff you have out of the way the easier the job will be. Go slow and you will be ok. I pull motors all the time and have removed and installed motors in many thirdgens. FYI if the trans is stock I would pull both the motor and trans and have it beefed up now and be done with it. imo

Re: swapping 305 2 460hp 350 help i'm dumb :)

ya i thought about just having the trans beefed up. it is still stock and i dont think it would last long with the motor i'm puting in it. i did get it out last night, i took my time and it went very well. now the cleaning and painting begins. i'll post some pics as the progress happens.

thanks for the input guys.

Re: swapping 305 2 460hp 350 help i'm dumb :)

have'nt updated this thread in a while so just thought i'd throw on a couple pics to show the motor now that its almost done. only thing i have to do now is port match the intake. i have it bolted down in the pic as i was getting ready to drill some alignment holes so i can start doing the porting. heads and everything else is done. i'm hoping this weekend to be doing all the finishing touches and getting ready to drop in. i work slow so we'll see. i do still have to get me a 2400 stall for my trans but its winter so no hurry. i'm still curious to see what this makes for hp, this summer i plan on having it dynoed. it would be great if it matches or beats the #'s from the build i followed. i'v had guru's tell me i should see 500hp and i have guru's say i'll be lucky to see 400hp. i'm just crossing my fingers it starts lol

thanks
brian

The wires you circled are all for your A/C and blower motor. If you are totally removing A/C and heat from your camaro, you can unplug those wires from the controls inside and just pull them out, no cutting needed.

go from side? u mean with cherry picker? my cherry picker wouldnt reach in far enough so i had to use my com along. it worked pretty well, and made easier as far as geting around and moving things with the hoist in my way. this was my first motor i had pulled on my own so i'm taking VERY slow. but thanks for the tip if thats what you meant.

well got the motor in today i know this hasn't been a very involved thread but thought id update it anyway. went in pretty easy and looks pretty sharp. I'm dieing to see what this puts down for hp. iv heard so many different opinions on it from 400hp to 510hp. definitely going to find a dyno this summer and find out.

i still have the 305. thining about trying a stroker motor with it i seen on youtube pushing 500hp. ya i'm probably dreaming but for now i have to finish up the camaro and then tackle that 68 mustang you can see in the back ground of one of the pics. i'm so geeked, i'v gone back out in the garage couple times today just to look at it big sense of accomplishment here

Re: swapping 305 2 460hp 350 help i'm dumb :)

david, sorry that was about a year ago and after i seen the video i did a search on yahoo and found there quite a few of them out there. i didnt even know you could take a 305 that far. i'm no gear head by any stretch but from what i read the guys who did them said they were making insane torque with them.

92camaro, sorry i meant 66. i had that car given to me from a relative. very solid underbody and a fresh motor. even the interior is in good shape. but i have to save that car for a mustang forum as far as the motor in my camaro. its not a stroker. i followed a build off of gmperformance .com that made 447hp. only difference with there motor is they had dished pistons and i have flat top, and they had stock bore and i have .060 over.

350 4bolt,
.060 over
flat top pistons
voodoo cam, 268/504
worked vortec heads, with as much performance as i could get out of them.
world products crosswinds intake
electric water pump
2400 stall converter
373 posi

i think that about covers it. i'm hoping to be a little better then they had and be in the 460hp range. iv had a ton of people comment on the build, some say 400hp some say 500hp atilla(no disrespect) told me id be lucky to see 400 but i think its a safe assumption to see mid 450hp out of this motor. we'll see.

Thanks anyway, I'll do some research on that. i thought about redoing the 305 that was my camaro and just decided to go with the 350. but theres nothing wrong with doing the 305. iv seen tons of builds where they get 300hp out of the 305 with out breaking the bank and needing forced induction. just punch in 305 build in yahoo and car craft, gmperformance .com, etc will have some nice builds you could follow. i have one printed out at home from car craft that made 340ish hp and it wasnt a wild complicated build. good luck i'm sure youll have fun with it.

Your project is looking great so far. By the way your are taking your time it looks like you should have no major problems getting it running like a champ. I like to see guys tackle projects like yours on there own. Too many people are afraid of building a car on there own and end up getting ripped off and disappointed from the results. I have no doubt it will make some good numbers. Keep us posted on the progress.

Yeah I hear you. I have a 91 Mustang GT myself (didn't buy it of course lol) that was given to me by a customer. I looked at building it up but decided to just put a custom paint job on it and sell it. To get it to perform close to my slowest Camaro would involve spending more than I would like so I'm going to sell it. They are some lite *** cars tho, mine is a virgin stocker auto that had some junk in the trunk and still weighed only 3250lbs with a full tank of gas!

Re: swapping 305 2 460hp 350 help i'm dumb :)

i thought it would be fun to have the american rivals in the same garage the 66 was given to me as well. i plan on taking the 289 to the max. iv found some nice builds and summit has a nice super charger for $1900 i'm thinking about getting for it. my goal is 500hp and from what iv read that will be about it from that 289 with out splitting that block in half. still not sure if i want to get wild with the paint job like i did on the camaro or keep it looking classic. there just so common so i'll probably go wild with it

Thanks 89fbrestor for you encouragement. I've already started looking at different web sites and ebay sellers for different Engine rebuild kits too. I'm gonna start saving for the project.

Re: swapping 305 2 460hp 350 help i'm dumb :)

Hey guys, could i get a little assistance with the electrical(hooking it back up)

1st wire is the pink 1 going to the starter. am i correct in thinking pink wire to small nut on starter and big nut goes directly to the batery?

2nd is 2 red wires connected together and a brown one with a ground attached. do i just run a lead from the two red that are connected to the nut on the alt. and plug in the brown with the plug. where does the battery come into play i think i have to hook that to the alt as well right? kinda lost on this one.

3rd is choke on carb. do i just run a power wire to the empty clip and ground out the black one.

sorry guys if these are stupid q's but if youv read the thread you know I'm new to this and iv been really trying to take my time and do everything correctly.

also how do i mount my low mount alt it looks like the alt will hit my fuel pump.. am i just missing something on this issue.

thank you everybody, free joy ride to the persons who helps lol

The thick pink wire that comes from your c100 is actually the hot (keyed) wire for your distributor. I am not sure about the other wires you have, it looks like they have been messed with before. The choke needs a keyed ign wire and it will work fine. You can ground it directly to the carb.

Re: swapping 305 2 460hp 350 help i'm dumb :)

there is a thinner pink wire pair with a thin brown wire with the dizzy clips which i didnt take a pick of. i assumed those were the dist wires. the thick pink one was previously connected to the starter. but like you said someone did mess with this so i am just trying to make it right.

thanks

I really like the color. I am also a snowmobiler and that is very close to being Arctic Cat Green!

That thing looks great!

You might want to do a mid mount alteration bracket if the fuel pump doesn't fit. March makes a great one. Mine was for a 6 o'clock/12 o'clock mount alternator, I'm not sure which bolt style alternator you are using.

Goodluck!

Man things are looking good there. You have that engine bay looking sexy lol. The feed lines should be after the fuel pump.
